Basically it means "not paying enough attention (via pretending or 'for real') about a nearby lady's efforts to get your attention (because she is attracted to you). Its a man's way of playing "hard-to-get". When a lady (or ladies) nearby try to get your attention because she (they) dig you, they will try stuff ranging from flirting to...well, I guess you catch my drift. And when you remain aloof with her (them), the message that often gets across is something like "this guy really must be cool" or "I gotta get his attention, if its this hard, it means when he's mine other babes won't find a way to him". Its also a way of showing that the man in question has class, panache, doesn't go for just any kind of babe. Its also encourages some prospective babes to go back (if unsuccessful in getting his attention) to find out what's really needed to get the guy "tuned in" to her frequency.
It helps in what I like to call Success-of-the-fittest competition among ladies.
