References are optional - if you don't have a long resume, sure go ahead and put them on there, otherwise, just say "references upon request". I look for 2 main things - the relevant experience needed for the job and some hint that the person has had accomplishments and successes in their previous job. You want to show what you contributed to your last jobs that an employer can expect to get from you. Experience is good, but you also want to emphasize that you are a good, dependable employee that will make a good contribution to the company.

Several things - here is what I look for:

1. Current Job. I always want to know how what they are doing relates to the job they are applying for and also why they are leaving.

2. Relevant experience for the position. If I ask for specific skills, I want to see where those skills were used in a job setting.

3. Credentials. Not just a college degree. Anyone can finish a degree, but I like to see where people have gone the extra mile and taken courses, gotten a certification, attended a seminar, published an article or book, spoken at a seminar, taught a course, or something out of the ordinary to set themselves apart from the crowd.

4. An organized resume with no major employment gaps. Gaps aren't a problem as long as you can explain them.

5. Well formatted. Take a little time to put something together. If it;s not your skill, then get some help from a friend or a professional.

Remember getting a job is a skill in and of itself. If you don't have those skills, then you may need a recruiter to "sell" you.

The big one - aside from clear contact info, and the resume itself being clear and to the point (ideally it's one page, never more than two) is a steady job history. If you've had six jobs in the last four years, that might raise a red flag to them.

NEVER put references on a resume, ALWAYS put "Available Upon Request."
