I don't think so. If you are Christian then the definition of death can be found in James 2 in the New Testament:
"For the body without the soul is dead."
Since the people aren't completely dead yet (they can die further) then I figure their spirit must still be there. It must be kind of frustrating to be in a body that won't do what you want it to do! lol...
Another reason I think this is because people have come out of being totally braindead and continued living. It is very rare but does happen.

I am hard pressed to believe in such a thing as a soul. If I did, then perhaps I would think that when someone is brain dead they are no longer the human beings they once were. If that is the case, then wouldn't their soul have moved on when they became brain dead and "unfixable"? A human being is more than a beating heart. A human being kept alive with machines but who will *never* recover isn't the same person either. He/she is incapable of ever expressing his/her soul again.

No, they are a human and are to be treated with the dignity that is befitting to all humans. Even though a braindead person may not be "rational" in the typical sense of the word, they have rational potentiality.

If you hang on to that person, so much with your own free will there so can not escape to its furthering journey. Hope and love is not enuff, for that person may have fought to stay alive even in acoma but eventually they will let go. The next thing or whatever you want to call is to tempting to sick around!

I have only seen one brain dead person, and I could sense an emptiness, as though that person wasn't in the room even though their body was... so I'd say yes.

Are you asking are they dead or are they no longer have a soul, They will have a soul after death.
