I'm getting married TWICE. we are going to the justice of the peace in October not telling but a selected few, because we didnt save enough money yet for the big one, and we really wanted October as our wedding month. So the big one is in April white dress bridesmaids the whole bang.
my question is...what do you do when you get married at the court house...do you dress up, how dose the ceremony go?

That is actually a very common scenerio. I think people would be surprised at how many people get married before the actual big wedding. We are a wedding officiant service, and we do this often. Usually, the couple just wears something dressy, like you would wear to church or a nice evening out. It doesn't have to be formal, just kind of dressy. It is really up to you and what you feel comfortable with though, you could go all out formal, or wear pants. Best wishes!

You don't have to get dressed up to get married at the Justice of the Peace- some people do to make it more special, and others just wear whatever they have on. (My mom and dad got married in jeans!!) The ceremony is really not a ceremony at all- not like the traditional wedding ceremony in a big wedding. The presiding judge or county clerk will just have you fill out a marriage license with your names, dates of birth, etc. and then just sort of read it over aloud so you can verify that the info is correct. Then they just read the simple part of the ceremony (Do you take this man...blah blah blah) and you say "I do" when your turn comes. Then they just notarize the marriage certificate with a seal and they sign the marriage license, and you're good to go! Congrats, and good thinking about planning the big wedding later.

I know everyone here is saying dress casual (and they're not wrong), but I'd just like to say that if YOU want to wear your wedding dress, then wear it! Or if you just want to get dressed up a little, go for it! It's your day, do it how you want!
Out of curiosity, have you considered just waiting until October '08 for your big wedding & skipping the JotP altogether?

You don't need to dress up..... I did this like 3 weeks ago. She wore a very simple dress, I had jeans and a button up shirt. No rings were exchanged. But in San Diego, at one of the offices, they have an outdoor area where you can get married that overlooks the ocean. It was nice and sweet. My brother and sister-in-law were witnesses to the marriage.

The ceremony is usually in a office with the JP & witness. Nothing fancy, but dress for how you feel and the way you want the man of your dreams to see you.

Casual dress and bring two witnesses. I don't know how it is where you live, but in AZ you have to pay 60 dollars to the justice of the peace to marry you. Hope that helped. Congrats!

Hi Jen....Truthfully...wear what you want...casual or a little dressy if you desire. The judge will say a few words and have you sign the papers along with your witnesses and then you are done. Quick and simple. So wear what your heart desires. don't look out landish or anything but wear what you normally wear if you want, just look presentable in front of the judge. Good luck with your marriage and God Bless.

Just dress nice. A slack suite or modest dress and he can ware slacks and a nice shirt. This shows that you respect each other and the Justice.

i suppose you could dress however you like. but it seems to me that on such an important day you should be looking and feeling your best. getting married is an honorable occasion. dress accordingly. a nice, even inexpensive dress, for you, at least a shirt and tie for hubby. and don't forget flowers. you deserve to feel special.

It is VERY informal. You just show up wearing whatever you want. Most people wear their street clothes. You stand in front of a magistrate and he does all of the talking.
