As far as we know, in all the 4.6 billion years Earth has existed, there has never been an "industrial revolution" which, in 150 years, created such massive vehicle emissions, smoke-belching factories and other Earth-shattering ecological disasters.
Man's own "ingenuity" and "genius" has managed to destroy the natural order of a process (global warming) that allows species and the environment to adapt over centuries.
So, yes, we really can DESTROY this planet in a matter of years, all because of our own avarice, short-sightedness, egoism, gluttony and sloth. -RKO- 07/31/07

Egotistical? If you really beleive that you are ego testicle. Leave religion and what you mistakenly assume is "historical perspective" out of it for a minute. If you don't trust the scientists who have said that global warning is a factual hypotheses( some of the most renowned in the world) talk with someone you know in the field of Heating and Air Conditioning. They may be able to show you , in laymans terms, how evaporation, condensation, heat exchange, etc. works. These are not the vapid ramblings of "Chicken Little."

I'm sorry but we are not living within any natural order, at least not willingly. We have completely separated ourselves from all things natural and instead live in a manufactured world. We don't see the garbage dumps, or the polluted streams and rivers. We couldn't bear to see anything that unpleasant. Instead we create in our minds our vision of a perfect world and ignore what is really going on. What is egotistical is our destruction of the planet, it isn't ours to kill.

Global warming will not destroy the planet. One way or the other, it will all be over in only 10,000 years, and there will still be some lifeforms left. Furthermore, I think it highly unlikely that humans will be among the species that go extinct.

Well neither side of the issue is being rational. We should watch our pollutants whether it creates global warming or not, and we should take into account several scientific perspectives on the issue rather than jumping to conclusions. Further, the argument isn't that global warming is going to destroy the planet, just make it less desireable, perhaps not noticabley in our lifetimes, but may or may not create a real pain in the *** for future generations.

Nobody is saying that we will destroy the planet. A major climate change could make things very unpleasant. Changing weather patterns could lead to regional or global food shortages, which in turn could lead to armed conflicts, etc.
It is well demonstrated that man can alter the environment on a local and regional basis. I am not completely sold on GW, but I think it is naive to dismiss the possibility out of hand based on your argument.

To be perfectly honest I like it. This is the best weather I've seen in years in central California, not too hot and an occasional sprinkling of cooling rain. Sometimes overcast and balmy. I'll pollute more if we can keep it this way. But what on God's green earth is a 'factual hypothesis?'

I think you are an attention seeker. The egotistical part is that you are willing to destroy the environment and bring misinformation to the public for personal use, whether it be ideological, political, or financial reasons.

Egotistical is exactly the word I have been searching for!
Man's ability to change the world is no where near what we like to think it is. We are not the all powerful master of nature but rather just another participant in the natural order.
To think that we have that level of control is ridiculous.

So, it's egotistical to think that we are not taking care of our Earth to the best of our ability? Maybe we are and maybe we are not destroying the earth, but either way the path we have been taking is not just 'depleting' our resources; it's hurting us as well. How about all the environmental diseases? How about all the childhood and adult sickness that were rare just 50 years ago are now raging rampant? Is it egotistical to ignore that and not make any changes just based on taking care of our future children? I don't think this global warming is just about the glaciers any more, I think it's about noticing what we are doing to the whole earth...humans included.
