Well God wasn't invented for the first thing. God is the one who created us. Maybe not in 7 actual days, but he did set into motion what happened to create the universe. As far as I know people have always believed in God, but every single society. People in different places believed in different things.

Religion and/or belief and worship of God has always been around as long as there have been humans on the earth.
Someone who is not "religious" today, doesn't mean they don't have a god they worship. It good be money, education, entertainment, pleasure, sex etc.. the lists goes on and on. Whatever you spend the majority of your time on is your God.

Nature spirits. Gods and Goddesses. Ancestral spirits, shamanism, animism, the Sun (The Aten, Ra etc)
