It'll be a quite a few years before I'm actually there, but I just want to know everything thats involved and things that need to be done. Like getting visa or HK ID card etc, where to live, all the arrangements and things that need to be known.

Moving to HK is not that easy as before. HK Government still have the power to control the immigrants. However foreigners would be harder. I would assume mainland Chinese immigrants would have the priorities.

Unless you have a company in HK to sponsor you to work in HK or set up a business there or have relative there. It's not easy, but you never try you never know

well actually because of the reciprocity of the visas is now so difficult for Americans and Europeans people to get a simple green card in HK or China, simple is so difficult, only they r accepting green card if you work in Xerox or Coca cola or IBM or Wall Mart, or u lawyer company refer you and u have to work for u company in HK or China or invest more than a million dollar , otherwise naaaaaaa is so difficult. But well u can try hire a HK immigration lawyer but the difference with an American lawyer is not too much and u know that lawyer is a lawyer, good luck.

due to population increase in hong kong, HK government is getting stricter on immigration controls. But to immigrate, get a HKID, get a apartment unit from the Hong kong housing authoritys and then get a job.

it is not easy to do if you decide to live permantly in china you will have to give up your american citizenship to stay there permantly
you can also check at travel.state .gov for help but for china threr is not duel citizenship available for this country and ours here
