I like the highest tension strings I can get. They seem more stable, last longer, Give my hammer hands something to push against, and seem to give me more overall sound and harmonics. I understand why some may like the lightest gauges, but I play fingerstyle mostly and I can pull an extra light E right out of the notch. Hope that helps.

Well this really depends on what you want out of your strings. You can get a fuller, deeper sound out of heavy gauge strings that is much desired by metal artists. On the other hand, this leaves you with little versatility. My personal choice is D'Addarrio 9 gauge for electric guitar. Picking a medium to lighter gauge string can leave you open for many more possibilities tonally as far as leads and bends and hammers and things like that. I've used my string set up since I've started playing: from my highschool metal band to the more experimental softer stuff of my college years. The only downside to light gauge is that you better pack a few sets for gigs or bring a backup axe, because if you're brutal to your strings they're unlikely to stand up to the constant abuse without an e or B string snapping eventually. But hey, that's just a casualty of the rock and roll in my opinion.

I much prefer medium gauge strings on all my guitars. My electric Gretsch stays in the closet most of the time with its Ernie Ball Slinkies, but my primary acoustics are wearing either Elixer or Martin SPs.

Although Elixers are great, smooth strings for jazzing around on the fretboard, the Martins keep my calluses thickened.

I never have problems with bending medium gauge strings, and hammer-ons and pull-offs work just as well for me. I simply like the heavier volume that mediums give.

I detest the ultra thin gauges for any guitar.

I'm an acoustic player, so anything I say only pertains to acoustic guitar.

I use D'addario Phosphor Bronze custom lights. Although my guitars are acoustic, I use them with electric guitar effects to play leads. So I need the extra bendability of the lighter guage high strings. At the same time, I also use the guitar as a standard acoustic, so I like heavier strings for the bass notes.

Custom lights are .011 - .052 so it's the best of both worlds.
