Mine will sleep that long, too. At 20 months, she still sleeps 12 hours a night, and is down to one nap, which can range anywhere from 1.5-4 hours, depending on how she is feeling, and whether anything wakes her.
I generally, now that she's over 18 months, wake her if she goes over 2-3 hours for her nap, so she's at no more than 15 hours of sleep in 24.
Growing bodies need plenty of sleep. If he weren't active, it could indicate a problem. Or if he was not growing well, had a head injury, or motor-cognitive skills were delayed/ showing problems.
Another thing that could cause over-sleeping, is anemia. A simple blood test would rule that out.

I hesitate to say it is "normal". All kids are different. Some kids don't nap very much. Others nap quite a bit. My kids were both 2 2 hour naps a day until they were almost 2. My daughter is now 6 and still would takes naps a few days a week.
So I think your son likes his sleep! Be thankful. My Mom said my brother would sleep about 8 hours a day if she was lucky from birth. He is now 30 and still only sleeps 5 - 8 hours a day.

My son went through the same, he is super active, he would sleep 12 hours at night, and long naps in the afternoon. He would wake up with so much energy. He's not 2 1/2 years old, and the same sleeping pattern was going on, but I had to stop the afternoon naps, because he wouldn't go to sleep early, so now he doesn't sleep during the day, goes to sleep around 8:00 p.m. and will sleep through the night. Sometimes more than 12 hours.
It's normal, don't worry about it. But if you're still a little worried, ask your pediatrician, but as I personal experience, it's normal. When he was a newborn, he would sleep so much, that I would manage to rest. Now with my second baby, I see the difference, she goes to sleep early, but her naps are every 2 to 3 hours, and are very short, no longer than 30 minutes.

My 13 month old sleeps about 13 hours daily, but he can sleep up to 15 on some days. I don't think you should be worried. Especially since he is active the rest of the time.
Talk to the doctor for no other reason than to calm your own concerns.

Im sorry but that is not normal for a 14 month old to sleep over 16 hours in one day. That would be normal if he was a newborn I would defintely take him to some doctor b/c I dont see anything normal about that and if my daughter was doing that at 14 months I would have taken her in. They should only take naps at that age not sleeping the day away.

It is a bit more than normal, but when I taught preschool I would hear from Moms that the active ones slept well. (Perhaps you have heard the expression "He has two speeds-Fast and Off"?) I would ask the doctor next time you go for other reasons, and maybe call if it really bugs you, but I think he is normal. Also I think that the super-active ones keep their moms hopping, so it is a BLESSING for you when he is asleep!

My daughter is eighteen months and sleeps from 7:30p to 6:30a (might sleep longer If i did not get her up for me to pass to wk) She naps from approximately 10-11:30 nonetheless 3:30- 5:30. i might say this sounds fantastically comparable on your son. i don't think of there's a subject because of the fact she is thoroughly frequent in all of her events. Alot of youngsters often drop that 2d nap yet i think of my daughter hasn't because of the fact I save her on an particularly good schedule and that looks like what you have carried out additionally. perhaps your son is merely very adjusted to it. i does not difficulty except his docs have a subject with it.

Count your blessings! :) I don't think it's unusual for a 14-mo to sleep that much. Above average, perhaps, but probably not abnormal.
If he's developing normally, he probably just needs a lot of sleep to recuperate and get his energy back. His brain is growing by leaps and bounds while asleep, so perhaps he just has a lot of information to process.

it's ok now that he's a bit older, but even babies shouldn't sleep that much. Wake him up during the day so he can develop a normal sleeping and eating pattern. Naps are fine but use your judgement, he shouldn't be sleeping 16 hrs.
