consider if an event of some kind may have contributed to your condition. eg. have you gained a lot of weight recently? have you done some heavy lifting (spent the weekend helping a friend move house), taken up weight lifting? jogging, some other new physical activity? moved into a new bed? (can affect spinal wellbeing).
if there is something that comes to mind, then avoid doing it again just for now.
define your symptoms as best you can. How severe are they and do they change during the day? pain down legs? tingling? where pain? where tingling? pay attention to your body and pass information to doctor to help with diagnosis and treatment.
here's my own experience. A few years ago when I was about 45yo I moved, by hand, around 4000 bricks from one side of our shed to the back of the shed. It took a few days, and I felt my back had had enough. I noticed dull aching down my legs and very occasional tingling down the front of the calves which was disturbing to say the least. When my back felt ok again I still had the discomfort in my legs. Thought it was a leg problem.
I put it down to wear and tear and due to moving the bricks. But the discomfort continued for a long time and didn't get much better. After 6 months I looked for a fix and worked out that it was sciatica and due to nerves from the lower back being pinched. Realizing that I do not have the best of postures I resolved to straighten up. Everytime I could remember I would quite purposefully tuck my tail in (push pelvis foward) to straighten the lower back, and stand tall to pull the rest into line.
Within 6 days the discomfort had gone.
I stuck with the postural thing and it hasn't come back after 6 or 7 years, fingers crossed. I still make an effort to avoid slouching. I freely lift heavy objects around again, but without overdoing it. Hope this helps.
BTW, I didn't take any tablets, or apply heat or cold or any of that stuff.

No sciatica is not a hereditary disease - it is because of compression of lumbar bones of your vertebrae. Usually, the
L3, L4 & L5 discs get compressed and because of that, the sciatic nerve gets pinched at the roots thus causing radiation of pain all along the buttocks to the tips of your toes, sometimes on one foot or both feet, depending on the severity.

Sciatica is not hereditary, but there are hereditary conditions that increase your chances of developing sciatica.
My Mom has sciatica. She has only had a couple of bad attacks. We think it is made worse by how she sits in chairs and since we made her use a recliner, she hasn't had a recurrence. That could be totally coincidental!
Don't let people bug you about always asking your doctor.You'd be amazed how many things my doc didn't know about. Unless they are a specialist, it is hard for them to keep up with the nuances of study in every single field!

Sciatica itself is not hereditary, but can be caused by certain conditions that are hereditary. For example a person who inherits a predisposition to scoliosis and gets it may also get sciatica.

Sciatica is not a disease its a condition that can happen to anyone, though it can be painful, you will recover, it only lasts for approx. a week , and can come back at any time. Just watch how you move and take care of it with ice and heat and tylenol until it passes

All it is --is the nerve in your buttock that FEELS like it's in your lower back or leg--or wherever.
It GOES AWAY!
It's from standing the same way --or straining on that leg or that side for a time-- or having a habit of it.
