I whole hearted agree. I think the reason parents imprint their religious beliefs on their children is that they are afraid that they will go to hell if they don't believe. Oddly, few people seem to question just how good God is if he sends people to hell for sincerely believing in a different religion.
IMHO, religious AND philosophical exploration is the cornerstone to finding meaning in one's life. When I was young, my parents exposed me to a variety of religious texts and philosophical disciplines. As I explored each one, my parents encouraged me to bring my critical reasoning skills to bear on the arguments that were central to each discipline.
The result? I am an agnostic, bordering on atheist, yet someone who probably knows more about biblical texts than many religious people I encounter.
Nor has my lack of faith resulted in my being morally corrupt. I consider myself a deeply ethical person, whose professional life is dedicated to helping the disadvantaged; a faithful husband, and loving father; and someone who gives a good portion of his income to charity. I do all of the above, not because I am afraid of God's punishment if I don't do it, but because I know it is the right thing to do.
For those of you who are religious and answering this question, consider which is more moral: to behave ethically because you know it's right, or because you fear heavenly repercussions if you behave badly?

As soon as you say religion, you are talking about a system of beliefs. What kind of parent would one be if he or she did not care enough for the child's soul to raise him or her in the way of that particular faith, right, wrong, or indifferent? After all, according to the parent's system of beliefs, not to raise the child in his or her religion might (in the parent's eyes) be risking the child's soul, and if the parent didn't believe this, he or she wasn't all that committed to the religion's beliefs to begin with. Religion entails conviction, and, morally speaking, the parent must follow his or her conscience.

I agree with you. My parents say that until i still live with them i should only study and practice my own religion. But, when i move out i can explore other religions. though if i change my religion when I'm older they would probably be really angry and never talk to me again

No. Why would a parent who loves his own children allow his children to be fooled by the ways of the world.
Is it not my responsibility to make sure that my children are raised with understanding? Am I really to hand that job over to someone else.
I have wonderful children and they are loving caring respectful kids. I know this fact has to do with me, my wife, and God.

Not all parents do that, though many Christian parents do. They do it because their religion tells them to.

because if you see your toddler heading into the road and a big truck coming, you won't let the child make is own decision on if he should get out of the way or stay put.
