For the big flukes, the best time is May. Reason, the squid enter Peconic Bay and are chased by the doormat flukes. For regular fluking right now is good, July/August. Yet not that many big flukes during the summer. This year the state law is 19 1/2 inches to keep a fluke. That's about a three pound fish. Tough to get one that big after the beginning of May. If you have a boat, the best place to fish is outside of Jones Inlet around the west bar.

Well, is it freshwater or saltwater? Saltwater bottom fishing will produce many bottom feeders and scavenger type fish. You can expect to catch flounder, sand shark, skate, bluefish, sea robin, croaker, drum, and catfish. If you are going in saltwater (oceans, bays), than you will want to stop a bait and tackle shop. Take two five gallon spackle buckets. Do not buy these! If you ask for a bucket at the bait and tackle shop, they'll rip you off. Go by a construction site and look in the dumpster. They throw them out by the dozens! Drill big holes in one, and tie a long rope to the top. This will be your chum bucket. Take the other one to the bait shop and buy bait. Ask for a pint of clam, two bunker, two mackerel, a box or two of squid, a pint of squid strips, and a bag of shiners (minnows). Also ask for four sausages of chum (preferably bunker). Make sure you have a good bait knife as well. Cut the plastic off one of the sausages of chum once you get to the dock. put the insides in your chum bucket. Tie the loose end of the rope to a post or the dock. throw the bucket in the water. the chum will attract all sorts of fish. Next, cut up some bait. add a heavy weight, and cast out as far as you can. Next, wait. You may also want to bring a medium sized spinning rod to cast a lure out. This will better your chances of catching a fish, and it will give you something to do. If you are going fishing in freshwater(ponds, rivers, lakes, creeks, etc.), you might catch bass, trout, sunnies, crappies, catfish, and carp. You will want to buy shiners (miinnows), a few tubes of powerbait (yellow is best) for trout, several containers nightcrawlers or other types of worms, and a bucket or a few bags of catfish bait.
