I have a 12-guage shotgun, but it is sawed off, so I wanted to get a handgun for home protection and shooting at the range. I want something in a silver finish for under $500. Reliable with stopping power. Not looking to carry it so it doesn't have to be compact.

These would all be good guns since you want something in a silver finish.

Well Taurus does make the Millennium Pro Series but I have heard a lot of bad things from all calibers but the .45 which would be big round for a smaller gun. Take a look at the Ruger P series. Rugers look like crap, but you will never have to worry about it not working...P89 in 9mm is about 475.00. Some people may suggest S&W Sigmas but they are very unrealiable so do not buy any of those. You may want to take a look at Taurus revolvers or their 24/7 pro series. They may be little higher than 500 but good weapons. Also look at Springfield Armory XDs. For around 500-550 they are the best guns on the market in my opinion.

not sure if the XDm is under $500 but that would be a good choice for carry. Either that or just an XD if your budget is strictly $500. Glocks are supposed to be really good but I never liked the feel of them. I personally feel like the XD is the luxury line of the Glocks and has a lot more features and the fit and feel is a lot better as well.

USED:
Go for a Sig chambered in .357 Sig, .40 S&W, or .45 ACP.
Or Glock

NEW:
Alternatively you could get a nice Smith & Wessom M&P chambered in .40 S&W or .45 ACP for around $450.00.
Or a Smith and Wesson Sigma series .40 S&W for around $300.00.

I know alot of people here in the section are going to be talking down because for the most part I've named polymer framed guns. As personal preference I have no problem with polymer guns with DAO.

Spend more money if you have it get you a nice 1911.

I like the Ruger Sp101 (.357 Magnum/38 Special), there are 2.25 inch and 3.06 inch barrel versions. I paid less than $500 for it brand new (I think I paid about $450 out the door price).

I purchased a new Walter P-22 nickel finish on the slide w/fitted laser sights for under $450. I don't suppose you're in the market for a .22 so you might want to look at the Rugers and Taurus in that price range. A stainless Beretta Tomcat .32 acp is also available under $500.

Good luck.

You can get a Glock for slightly over $500, there was a sale where I got my P226 last Saturday and the Glocks were about $400-450.

Glocks are about the best you can get for that price.

Check out the Taurus Millenium Pro, they have a stainless/nickel finish in 9mm, 40cal, or 45 cal for about $350-400 at Cabelas (or other dealer near you.)

a sawed off shotgun can get you in a lot of trouble (like 5 years federal penitentiary time ) if the end of barrel to breach is shorter the 16-1/2" inches. You may want to check the length and purchase a replacement barrel and destroy the original so you don't get your butt in a sling.. Bury the other barrel for long term for the potential SHTF someday scenario, until then get the correct barrel.

Sawed off shot guns are no better for hunting. If you have to use it for self defense you will get caught and in trouble.

Check around for local gun shows that may come near you area. You can get good deals on all types of weapons. I would recomend a 44 magnum.
