Also, how to stress the words (in Tokyo Japanese)? In English, for example, we stress the first syllable of a bisyllablic word and stress the middle syllable in a trisyllablic word if it's a long vowel, etc.

Finally, are they rules regarding tones? If yes, what are they?

Thank you.

japanese are open syllable.
'hiragana' and 'katakana' are syllabograph.
a i u e o
ka ki ku ke ko
sa shi su se so.....

ex. band = 1 syllable in english
band = 3 syllables in japanese (ba-n-do)
rule of diphthongs are almost same as english.

About tone> According to some books that describ the Japanese phrases,
It has no tones.....Uh...when we usually talk to someone,
There is not tone .Spoken Japanese is like a flat board.
However, I think there are many accents in japanese
language that depend on a region, person's feeling.
When we lisen to J-pop music,we feel an accent is there.

About stress>Long vowel in Japanese language(also in Tokyo)must be pronounced twice as long as short vowel.
Important thing ,vowel length ca change the meaning of a word.

ex) suki means 'to like'
sukii means 'ski'
Exceptation)The vowl of 'u' is sometimes not pronounced.
especially,between 'k' and 's'.

There are 5vowles(wao...few?) in Japanese language(Tokyo & most regions).

'a' as the a in ' father'
'e' as the e in 'get'
'i' as the i in 'pin'
'o' as the o in 'loutas'
'u' as the u in 'put' ,but 'yu' sound as in 'use'.

In my opinion, spoken Japanese is a piece of cake!

Tokyo is the capital of Japan. Not the name of a language.
