I think it was the religion of the ancient Sumerians. I think their main goddess was Tiamat and main god was Marduk. Of course there are those ancient Venus/fertility statues that have been found at many ancient sites.

You know, if I go back to my school days decades ago I will remember that the supposed first 'religion' was very rudimentary and something we would call 'pagan'. I really don't think that we know what the first religion was. I think that we have evidence of early religions on cave walls or perhaps some artifact that was found in ancient sites.
I am a Christian and I recognize this BECAUSE Adam did not have a religion. What Adam had is a relationship with God. He didn't need a religion. He had God right there with him.
So it's nothing to do with 'religion' to describe what Adam had. And you will find Christians today saying the same thing. Those of us who have it right, I will boldly say, know that religion in this context does not apply, and the discussion ought to be about the relationship with God that we are able to have thanks to Jesus Christ.
Christianity when done right is no more a religion than a marriage would be a religion.

Adam and Eve didn't have a "religion" in the Garden of Eden. They didn't need "faith" because they walked with Him.
Most religions are man-made for selfish political gains. Most of those die out and new ones are created or existing religions are warped to serve selfish political gains.
Some religions are kept closer to God's will for us by having prophets teach us, such as Mohammad, Buddha, Confucius, Isiah, etc. There is only one religion, that I am aware of, that has claimed God Himself has come down to teach us. That is Christianity.
The apostles did not expect to start a new religion, but add Jesus' teachings into the existing Jewish faith. When the Jewish faith refused to accept Jesus, then they morphed their Jewish roots into Jesus' teachings and it became Christianity.
What was the first religion? Don't know. What was the first recorded religion? Still don't know. What does it really matter?

The first answerer is only partly correct. Marduk and Tiamat are the names given by the Babylonians who in fact adapted their stories from the Sumerians, the Gods original names were Enki, Enlil, and Anu. There were many others including their wives, children and human/god hybrids. According to Sitchin they were more likely off worlders than GODS but if you consider God the creator, they are the gods of men. Just not the Gods of the Universe.

The oldest religious artefacts found are small models of "the great mother." Because these predate written records one can only say that the original religion(s) worshiped a/the goddess.

From my studies, I would say that the first recorded religion was that of a Shamanistic society. Good question...maybe it will cause many Christians to pause and think.

The problem with questions like yours is:
Today science tells you the earth is flat, tomorrow they tell you its round - so why bother with some "first recorded religion" if tomorrow they tell you something else???
