I'm thinking of buying a car for a cheap price but the car has no title.(project car)
I was told the previous owner file Bankrupcey. I guess the bank has the title.

How would I get a title for the car? Any LEGAL ways to work on this problem so I could drive the car in the near future if I buy it?

thanks

No title, don't buy!

With no title, the car isn't yours and you'll just be handing money over to the "seller"

The car belongs to the title holder, and they can come after the car and repo it.

Walk away!

Thats a little like buying something out of a guys trunk on the street isn't it?

Ok. so here's some basics

1) Title or not, YOU can check to see who owns it. Just copy the VIN and go to the dmv or a place that will do that.

2) You may find out that the car is more then a repo waiting to happen (ie: Stolen).. this is important if you plan to fix up the car because
a) IF it is stolen and you do a great job of restoration, the old owner will really appreciate it when the police finally recover it (when you go to clean up the title).
b) Same thing for the bank who would still own the car
c) Or the police, if the car was used in a crime and they want it as evidence..

and so on....

Once you find out who legally owns it, contact them and make an offer. To make it simple you will also need to get the 'previous' registered owner to sign off or you face the same possible problems.

A bit of work, mostly paper work, but depending upon the car and the potential it may be worth it to you.

If that doesnt work... contact the dmv about transferring or obtaining title to an 'abandoned' car.

Either way... I would not pay all the money to the seller until you get the matter resolved to your satisfaction.

hahah i knoe where you found the car

is this the right info??
white 1991 nissan 240sx coupe
245xxx miles on a stock ka24de motor
automatic transmission

car still starts and runs fine. a few minor dents on the front fenders but no major body damage. i purchased the car as a project but never got around to working on it. i do not have a title for it so i'm selling it as a parts car despite the fact that it still runs (i do have the keys, though).

ah yea i was looking at that same car hahah

depends where you are. the title laws differ from state to state. You need to ask your motor vehicle dept. I t will also matter what year the car is. Example: In new york any car older than 1973 doesn't have a title. If the tranferable registration is lost you must use a lead pencil to "trace" the vin number on a piece of paper and submit it to DMV. they'll give you a temp registration until they can look to make sure it's free & clear. If alls good...they mail you one, If not good....you'll get a police car in your driveway.

Best you pass on this one. If a financing institution has the title, you would need to talk to them and see what it would take for them to release it. Or, if the vehicle has been declaired a total loss by an insurer, you could possibly obtain a "reconstructed" title. Either way, be sure you have signed and notarized, legal possession before you proceed.

I have one piece of advice.Drop it like a hot potato. If you really want the car you will have to go to the bank and work out a deal with them,as they are the legal owner of the car.I would forget it if I were you.

how old is the car? see if you can get the vin from the seller and have a vin check done to see if there are any lien's against it. if so you would most likely have to satisfy those liens to get a title, if not you can probably get a lost title or go thru broadway or some other title company to get a title

Get the paperwork before handing over money and doing the restoration work. It's only common sense that if you don't have a title, you don't own the car.

well if i were you i wouldn't buy a car wqithout a title... you would never be able to sell it or register it. but once to go to the tag agency they can file for a lost title and then maybe if you have a bill of sale you might be able to get the tittle
