While I am no expert on hybrids and such (or cars in general), I don't believe that it will actually make that much of a difference. If everyone in the U.S. owned a eco vehicle that would probably mean something, one person is like a rain drop in the ocean.

However, if you can afford one I see no reason not to buy one, it is indisputable that you will be putting less green house gas into the air and you do get a hefty tax cut for purchasing a green vehicle. As for those that say they are worse for the environment to produce, I have no idea whether that is true or not, I guess further research is recquired.

It's not so much helping as it is hurting less, but I understand the gist of the question, which is what is the relative effect versus a standard vehicle.

The difference between a standard vehicle and what is called a hybrid is in the overall sense minimal. For one thing, the term hybrid is somewhat misleading. The sole source of fuel for any automobile, hybrid or otherwise, is gasoline. The difference with the hybrid is that some of the energy is recaptured and stored as electricity for use in propulsion, while a regular car's electrical system is used only for powering certain systems within the vehicle and for initiating the combustion reaction. (I note that you do not use the term hybrid, but I assume that is to what you refer.)

The primary criterion that should be considered is the fuel efficiency for your style of driving, meaning comparing highway MPG (or km/L) if you drive on highways primarily and city MPG is you mainly drive stop and go. Hybrids do better on fuel effiency when compared to their non-hybrid counterparts, but the extra cost in the hybrid technology might not compensate for the savings on fuel. However, that's an economic argument. Still, I would rather operate a compact non-hybrid versus a hybrid SUV if pollution factors are of concern, but the hybrid compact is a little better.

ADDENDUM: Oops! I seemed to miss the subtle difference between a hydrocarbon-powered vehicle and an hybrid. As all hybrids are hydrocarbon-powered, my analysis still stands, but only as far as hybrids are concerned. :-)

Until your stopping cows from farting...not a whole of a hell alot....also do you know how much "carbon" is released during the manufacturing of your "eco" car? Well lets just say the actual manufacturing of those electric batteries puts out the same if not more carbon into the air than the manufacturing of a Hummer......"eco" cars may give better gas mileage but as for being more earth friendly...jury is still out...

I really wouldn't think a whole lot, and I have to admit its better then getting a hummer....lol, but with gases prices anymore who can afford one but Al Gore. But yeah with the cattle, and the Volcanoes its amazing how nature is technically destroying her self according to the Liberals, but they turn that blame into "its all the humans fault" but more importantly all the humans except them selves.

Helping the environment is a collective thing with everyone doing something.

But look at it another way. You will spend less on fuel. That is money in your pocket.

Not at all helping the environment. But like a liberal you could feel better about your self if this is what is important. We all should feel good about yourself but this from the inner self not from the outer. I drive a nice big gas hog Truck with nice big Bush stickers and still voting Demacrate ? Still voting stupid! o make the left get mad.
Ever heard of the song about the little hybrid and the SUV. Rush plays it now and than it is good and he plays it when ever there is a SUV update. media (SUV drive crazy in runaway killing spree) Media head lines to get the lefts focus as they do not read the whole story but the by lines. So to get them to buy a paper or tune in to air America aka Communist news network or the likes. They have to be short and sweet. Point is the whole issue about carbon and cars and man doing the damage is dun like the one person who said cows fluctuating is a bigger issue than mans cars.
Even PETA knows this and has come out against AL Bore for meat eating and adding to the bigger issue in their mind. By breeding more cows and than they need coats and every person will have to leave the planet to make room for them. I love it makes for great entertainment.
But if you buy one it is OK if it is for gas reasons on your budget but in the long run per the consumers report you would be better buying a Hummer. As the batteries last only a short time we have not moved for enough and produced enough even if the technology was there to make it affordable. So with this in mind and maintenance cost or up keep and gas prices and the amount of miles you can travel on one charge is not worth it.
And to make the batteries it takes manufacturing which is burning carbons and emitting in to the environment more of what is being sought to avoid. It is a wash! And the only people who do buy this are the left who do not research the whole story at least for once I will say about PETA is right about this one point. I on the other hand love a nice big steak cooked medium rare where it is still mooing. And the Hummer is a better buy when all factors are used and this data is out there for any one who wants to know.
If you want to feel good about your self than buy one as a statement that you care like others who do buy this. But if you want the best bang for your buck do not and take in to account all factors. It is up to you as you know you better than any one else.
I do not think you will myself as you have a great mind and you pose many good things to get people looking at issues.
Poetry in motion should be your middle name. xoxo

The conservative lie is that we can't do anything about it, so let's all continue to pollute recklessly. The truth is that each of us contributes to the problem, and if a large number of individuals each do a little, we will improve the environment.

You, personally, will also save on your gas bill if you buy a "hydrocrabon eco vehicle".

By the way, if you ask more questions on this topic, you should call the car a hybrid or a Prius. It will make your "question" sound slightly more sincere.

buying your lib-car will only help you feel better...and get you invited to parties giving by greenie-weenies. it doesn't do a damm thing to help or harm the environment.

Not that much. You're just blowing money (most likely borrowed) to make yourself feel better. Algor would be proud. Thanks for preserving the petroleum products for his jet!
