Thank you so much. You have put into words some of the scattered skepticism that I have about this whole 'global warming' scheme. It may be true, it may not. But what is presented to us is just as you describe - a consensus of scientists (unnamed, unknown, unaffiliated). Great question.!

Nobody votes to have a consensus doofus. It just means that virtually all climate scientists accept global warming theory. Nothing more. I very much doubt you could even =find= a thousand climate scientists who state that humans can't affect climate.
And we know consensus doesn't make science. We've never stated otherwise. Consensus is just what you're left with when the science has been done. For example, there is a widespread scientific =consensus= that the planet is about 4.5 billion years old, there is a widespread scientific =consensus= over evolution by natural selection, there is a widespread scientific =consensus= over Einstein's theory of relativity, etc.
And GABY, 'global warming' doesn't mean that the temperature increase must be uniform. In fact, some places may show little or no warming at all. Global warming is simply the observed increase in the global =average= temperature over the past century.

Essentially, you answered your own question: validation and humor. There are other reasons, too, but it depends on a few factors: 1. What kind of question are you dealing with? 2. Who is the person that is asking the question? 3. Why are they asking the question? 4. What category is the question under (or SHOULD be under)? Validation is the #1 reason people ask questions, especially in areas like politics, pop culture, and religion. Some people pick a dumb answer because they think it is funny. That said, what is a good or dumb answer will vary from person to person depending on their point of view. An answer that you think is dumb might not seem dumb to another person. If a person is younger or older then that may affect their choice of answer, too. The biggest reason, however, is that a lot of people come here for the fun of it. A lack of a serious reason to be here is going to result in a lack of serious asking and answering. In the case where the answers can be misleading or harmful, you have a very legitimate complaint. That said, it is the responsibility of the asker to take the time to confirm all information that they receive here. Ultimately, Yahoo! Answers is NOT a good or reliable source for information. I am not so sure I understand why anyone asks serious questions here in the first place, but if someone is going to ask, then sure as heck better confirm the information somewhere!

Nobody votes on "the consensus". Scientists independently examine the scientific data regarding global warming, and the vast majority independently come to the same conclusion that humans are the primary cause of the global warming over the past 40 years. Vast majority = consensus.

"Why ignore the thousands of scientist who state that man has no influence over the climate?"
What thousands would that be? Are they climate science experts or just random people, like those who signed the Oregon Petition? Do they have evidence to support their positions?
"Is your emotions scientifically sound?"
Sounds to me like you're the one being emotional. Science has nothing to do with emotion.
"Science does not need a consensus to determine what the facts are."
No, it doesn't. It needs scientific proof. When there is scientific proof, then scientists agree on the conclusion, which then creates a consensus. The consensus simply shows that the evidence is overwhelming.
"Science needs just one man who can prove he is right."
Exactly. Who can PROVE he's right, or at least show that he's most likely right. When he does, scientists agree, and that forms a consensus.
Please take some time to examine the science behind global warming.

Very Good Question. I have been so frustrated with this. I keep searching the Internet and find more and more reports with data and information that seems to contradict the "Consensus", but so many people do not want to even answer or address the questions raised.
For example, on CO2Science.com, they have actual temperature records for places all over that show no increase in temperature in the US, and question some of the data used. What is wrong with this? I thought this was good science. Always trying to refine the data.

When Copernicus discovered that the Earth went around the Sun,the Church was so outraged, they threw him in prison for years ! That sure put an end to that problem! Who was he to go against the word of God? Would it make you feel better if we put all those pesky scientists in prison for trying to force their claims of Global Climate Change on you? We are on a little wet rock, spinning through Space ! If you have a degree in Earth science or Natural science, I would give you the benefit of doubt, but you're definitely not educated in science !

Consensus is not an exact term. It just means something like "what most people agree on".

Liberals control the mainstream media, and liberals want global warming to be true. Call George Orwell, it's 1984 all over again.

Your question is absurd. The vast majority of climate scientists agree that global warming is real, and caused by humans burning fossil fuel.
