THE HDTV BROADCAST STANDARD IS 1080i PERIOD.
SONY AND TOSHIBA ARE PUSHING 1080p BECAUSE ONLY BLURAY AND HD-DVD WILL PLAY 1080p.
THEY'VE ONLY CHANGED THE BROADCAST STANDARD ONCE IN THE OVER 60 YEARS OF TELEVISION...AND THAT'S WHAT WE'LL BE STUCK WITH FOR A LONG TIME.

It wont be for a very long time, if ever. Remember that 720p and 1080i are recognized HD standards. they are no worse or better than 1080p.

1080p would require a ton more bandwidth to send. Cable and satellite already have limited space which they can better use to add more channels.

Different stations broadcast at different resolutions. There is no set date for a switchover to 1080p. Anything 780i or above is considered High Def. Some broadcast stations that claim to be HD aren't even that high yet - they're still in the 560 range. It is up to the broadcasters to switch to a higher resolution, not the cable or satellite company.
