UK? Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra, Toyota (they have a couple of suitable ones I think - take a look at their website).

Volkswagen/ Skoda Felicia, 45/50 mpg, all mod cons, and spanner less removal of rear seat for extra large loads. Utterly reliable, dirt cheap insurance, and VW reliability, with low insurance costs. How do I know? I am a semi-retired motor engineer, I also own one. I bought it as a stop gap between my old car and delivery of my new company Astra. They really are bullet proof, if you change the oil and filter when recommended. I have requested one as a replacement for the Astra when the service contract is up. I want the Favourite or Superb now that the Felicia has ceased production.

Find a list or make up a list of 1400 cc,and then run an insurance quote to each. Always bear in mind your location,as eg a friend of mine lives in hilly Dorset, compared to my flat lands, and swears some cars are underpowered for the terrain. When you can fit the criteria to your needs, which isn,t always your first chice,at least you will have considered the options Stay lucky

I would recommend a Renault Megane... but only 'cos I have one for sale. 1.6 5 dr, group 5 insurance, electric windows and sunroof. Not too bad on maintenance, rattle a bit (but it's French), and surprisingly reliable.
Rather than post a link and get in trouble for selling I'll just tell you it's on Ebay: search for - Renault Magane 1.6 RT Silver.
