There is no cure for cancer, but there is treatment that may lead to remission. However, the biggest factor in remission is not necessarily the type of cancer someone has but the stage of the cancer as well as the patients age, overall health, and response to treatment.

Cancer is a progressive disease, which means that if it is found 'early' when there are small nodules and only a few there than it can be treated. Treatment in these early cases may mean complete surgical resection and the patient is in clinical remission, hopefully indefinitely, but there is no guarantee.

Untreated cancer in the lung will progress, which means it will grow larger everyday and eventually begin to 'seed'. Seeding means the tumor is large enough to shed microscopic copies of itself. These malignant cells are sent into the blood stream and can lodge somewhere else in the body. This is called metastatic cancer. It is metastatic cancer that is life threatening and the most difficult to treat.

There is treatment for metastatic lung cancer and again successful treatment will depend on many factors, including the patients age, overall health, and tumor response.

Cancer spreads by glandular (glands) or pulmonary (blood).
There are small cell & large cell cancer.
Stages or levels determinining how advanced.
Plus numerous types for each area attacked.

My friend diagnosed with a fast growing lung cancer that also spread to create a malignant (cancerous) brain tumor. Emergency surgery on brain tumor to save live, when stable radiation on brain area & removal of part of lung. It was traveling thru the blood and diagnosed at level 4 (advanced) with 3-4 month life span.

That was 10 1/2 years ago. Still a remission? Mystery? Miracle? Doctors still shaking their heads in disbelief!

There are basically 2 types of lung cancer; small cell and large cell. Small cell, when discovered usually produces death within 6 mos to yr MAX. The other type is treatable, particularly if detected early, with Chemo, radiation and supportive care.
