I've been saved for 7+ years now & counting........
I actually have 2 questions:
1) What type of music did you used to listen to before you got saved?
2) Have you totally stopped listening to it because of our faith in Christ?
My answers:
1) Heavy metal (Kiss, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest), soft rock (i.e. Billy Joel, Elton John)
2) I still own those CD's and every now and then.....pop in a Billy Joel CD just because.

I have slowed down though (No more Priest or Maiden)....there is alot of stuff out there that is not glorifying to God that I simply refuse to listen to.

I used to listen to soft rock....big crush on Sean Cassidy. I read a book about the music that you listen to and how it affects you...and the very same day I gave over my music choices to the Lord, my mother came home with a new tape of someone she had never heard of before Dallas Holm. (known for the song Rise Again.) God took one kind of music out of my life and replaced it the very same day with His kind of music....Have been listening to Christian Music ever since.....also love Michael W. Smith. I listen to K-love Radio and because my church uses the same songs that I hear on the radio, it re-inforces what I learn on Sundays.

1) I listened to all types of music before I became a Christian, but mostly alternative, old rock, really old jazz, opera and classical.
2) No.
And dude, there are SO many better Christian artists than Michael W. Smith (booooooooring) and the Gaithers. For crying out loud, branch out a little! Phil Keaggy, Innocence Mission, Casting Pearls, Out of the Grey, Over the Rhine, Charlie Peacock, Buddy and Julie Miller, even the Newsboys are better than Michael W. Smith! Plus there are some bands that are mostly comprised of Christians, such as Sixpence None the Richer (my husband used to tour with them when he was in a band, too) and Nickel Creek.

I owned an Arts and Craft store in a large Mall, when I was saved. Prior to this I played popular music over my stores PA system. No customer ever made a comment regarding the music.
The day after I was saved, I started playing Christian music over the PA system. Few days ever went by without someone making a favorable comment about the music.
Today, in addition to my present position I am a week end DJ and I play "Golden Oldies" which I enjoy and on Sunday, I play "Southern Gospel" which I also enjoy. Some of my pre-christian music is acceptable and some is not.

You say you have been saved 7 yrs & counting, you don't really say how old you are. In my days as a young person, I go back to the 1950's & 1960's time frame, back then songs had a meaning to them, They were not bar drinking wife cheating songs, Yes you had a few that may have been, But they were clean cuts songs, & I still have many of those 45 RPM, I was never a Elvis Presley fan, nor a Beatle fan. There is also a few songs that is clean cut as late as the 1970's. I call them clean Cut Love songs. Do I still listern to them, Yes, once in awhile, But I mainly listern to Southern Gospel Songs now. Do I listern to heavy metal songs or hard rock songs, No, In fact I did have one old song of Elton John, But when I found out he is gay, i took that record & toss it into the fire, You have to see if a song is clean cut, & heavy metal or hard rock songs is demonic songs, Oh yes, I have heard a few, not because I like them, But I wanted to see what they was trying to say.

I'm a "child" of the 60's and 70's and still enjoy hearing some of the rock and roll from those years. Over the 80's my tastes drifted into country and then into new age or meditation like Constance Demby and some jazz without words. I have never cared for a lot of christian music but there are some songs I do like such as by Ray Boltz and such. I don't like christian music just because it's christian. It needs to float my boat like Neil Diamond and Marshall Tucker Band and the Eagles.

1) What type of music did you used to listen to before you got saved?
Same type groups you stated, not so heavy maybe. Aerosmith, Def Leopard (sp?), ect. Prince (eekk).
2) Have you totally stopped listening to it because of our faith in Christ?
I find myself being careful about the lyrics in the music. I have found several alternatives in Christian Music such as Toby Mac, Switchfoot, Reliant K, and my daughter likes Demon Hunter (I find it a little much most of the time).
I also enjoy country music because MOST (not all) of it is a little better as far as lyrics. I have become a lot more cautious of what I listen to because of having my kids as well.
A little of topic, I came across the movie Grease recently and my 10 year old wanted to watch it. At first I said, "Sure, I loved that show!" But after watching about 20 minutes I realized how full of sexual suggestions and bad behavior it was. I didn't even notice it before, but now I am so much more sensitive to it. That isn't what I want my daughter to believe relationships are all about!

I've been saved for a year.
1) What type of music did you used to listen to before you got saved? No Christian music, some Eminem. I was a lyrics person and I liked songs that meant something. One of the reasons I was drawn to Christianity was that the music had words that were not about sex and drugs.
2) Have you totally stopped listening to it because of our faith in Christ? No. I mean, I dropped the Eminem because I didn't like it anymore and I found it gross. But I don't think that all non-Christian music is bad. You just have to really be listening to the lyrics. If one song has a bad message or too many bad words, toss it. If you would be ashamed to have Jesus listen to your cd, toss it. I listen to a couple of Iron Maiden and Elton John songs. Not all of them are bad. U2 isn't Christian but a lot of their lyrics are socially positive. My favorite band right now is Switchfoot. They were once a Christian band and now they have crossover success.

I grew up on heavy metal and rock, like what you listed.
I still listen to some non-Christian songs and groups. I'm a huge Dream Theater fan (partly because I'm a drummer and Mike Portnoy is incredible! :D) There's a lot of great Christian metal out there though so I'm not lacking for stuff to listen to.

I listened to all different kinds. Heavy metal, pop, country, oldies.
Now I am more careful of the content of the songs. But I am not sure if that is b/c I am a mommy and need to watch what my son hears or not. Oddly enough my extremely straight laced traditional upbringing, preacher's son of a husband introduced me to Reggae and that comprises most of our listening. I think he loves it b/c even now his parents have hissy fits over it even though the selections we listen to are about God.

Amen brother, I was a metal head in the 70 -80s. I always had faith but thought music didn't or couldn't play a role in the big picture or life. It does.
Like you every now and then if I hear a song and I'll sing alone.
