good question.... mine does the same thing.. sorry i don't have an answer.. must be a cat thing.. she even hunches down like she's going to attack the bowl before she does it... It's funny... anyway have a good day!! : )

first of all your cat is not scratching it is simulating a pawing motion that it did when it was a kitten when drinking from the mothers teet also your cat is probly 1 year old or younger right?

My cats do this too. I had heard that it was because they are marking their territory. Their paws release a secretion of some sort or something...who knows...

Probably a primal instinct , the same as dogs going in circles before they go to sleep they a flattening the grass .

It sounds like she's trying to clean a little first: We've had kitties who would do that. It seems to be an instinct a lot of them have.

This may sound crazy, but is it possible she "smells" something, that she thinks she needs to "cover" up? Cats are so funny.
