I have a family of 6, so I would need a big enough place, roommates won't work for me. Thanks.

Congratulations! I am a graduate of John Jay and can tell you that school is booming, and will be expanding within the next couple of years to accomadate all the new students.

Unfortunately, it doesnt really have student dormitories and whatever housing they offer is generally for foreign exchangers.

When i attended, i lived in Queens and found it no problem to make it there on time. Columbus Circle subway station will be your new best friend, start to learn the many train lines that stop there.

For a family of 6, i would recommend Maspeth, Middle Village, Sunnyside and maybe Jackson Heights, in Queens. To get to class will take roughly an hour or so depending on time of day and location.

If you want to live in Manhattan, the only real option you could afford would be in uptown manhattan in the neighborhoods of Washington Heights and Inwood. Apartments there are cheap by NYC standards and are in pretty good shape. The area is improving too and the commute is a breeze for all you have to do is take the Downtown A-train (which runs express) to Columbus Circle.

Brooklyn is an option too, but kind of a distance. NJ is okay, but you will have to pay for a car to get around and that means expensive daily parking in classes as well as expensive insurance

I agree with laser-guided democrat. Go out to Queens. Middle Village, Rego Park, Kew Gardens, Elmhurst are also all good areas to look. You will need to commute, but trains into midtown are frequent and if you are on an express stop, it really makes a big difference. There aren't enough big apartments on a student's budget in Washington Heights to accomodate a family of 6.

You may even want to see if you can rent a house in Floral Park. Some of the outer areas in Queens are good for finding rental houses, but it would add another 20 mins by bus to your subway commute.

John Jay College is an excellent school for police science. As far as living quarters try Passaic New Jersey or Ocean Parkway Brooklyn. You are still going to spend over $1500 a month of a huge apartment for the family.
