Can I just walk over a bridge to get to the Arlington cemetery or are they just bridges for cars? If so, how can I get over the river?

Yeah the memorial bridge crosses right over to the cemetery. If your at the mall just walk to the Lincoln memorial and keep going straight toward Arlington you cant miss the bridge.

You can walk over the Arlington Memorial Bridge, which runs across the Potomac River from the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. to Arlington Cemetery in Virginia. As mentioned, the Arlington Cemetery Metro stop (Blue Line) is right there if you don't wish to walk back to the District (just over a mile).

That would be a pretty long walk, no matter where on the Mall you are! Take the Blue Line Metro towards Franconia Springfield. There's an Arlington Cemetery stop.

I don't know about walking, but I do know that the Metro subway has stops at both the Mall and Arlington. It's cheap and easy access.
