maybe because you are focusing on how much they are going to give you instead of looking at them like any other customer. you can't say you treat everyone the same or else you wouldn't have notices that blacks don't tip.

The way you posed your question lends you to be perceived as a prejudiced person, as you're claiming that MOST people who share the same skin color, AA, don't tip. That is a pretty big assumption you are making about a group of people, when you've never met "MOST" of its members. Is like generalizing about all females or males based on the few experiences you may have had in life.
Having said that, in order for you to receive an answer that could make you understand those you find to be bad tippers- I would suggest you take the skin color out of the question because skin color alone says nothing about upbringing, education level, age or state. However, give more info about the type of restaurant you work for; do you work in a diner, fast food, take out, or swanky restaurant?
You also claim that you do give them a good service, coindentially I attended a psychology class when a classmate asked the same question but about another group. The professor said that it may have been a matter of transference. Meaning that if you do believe, as you ask, that "most African Americans" don't tip, then unconsciously you treat them differently than you would treat your other customers. Because you expect them not to tip, you wouldn't spend the same amount of time or give the same attentive service that you would give to another customer who isn't AA and you are serving at the same time as the AA customer. Hence, your AA customers don't leave you a tip.
The fact that you say that you don't think you're giving them a different service isn't sufficient proof- because you aren't on the receiving end.
Good luck.

I sense a bit of under the collar racism here? I refuse to believe that almost an entire race doesn't tip. I think it can be one of three things. #1 - They have never held a job that is underpaid and tips make up the majority of your wages. #2 - May they don't know the proper etiquette of tipping. You'd be surprised how many people don't know there are "respected" minimum tips. #3 - They are probably just cheap. Yes, I think the third one hits it right on the nail.
If you and your coworkers are this concerned why not put some statistics together on your own job and you'll be surprised how it has nothing to do with race. Most of people in the service industry have problems with non-tippers. Remember, everything you do comes back to you. They'll learn one day. Hopefully soon!!! Please in the future look for a more realistic reason for non tipping, not race. Race is completely out of the question. Good Luck!!

In South Fla we get alot of Canadians in the winter - snow birds, and they are infamous for not tipping. Apparently in Canada it's common for the tip to be included in the bill so they don't leave $ on the table, tho common sense says they should learn that local customs are different and go with the flow. The point it, it could be cultural. Or you could not be giving as good service to everyone as you think you do.

You shouldn't look forward to tips when doing your job. Whether your service is good or what, customers are NOT OBLIGED to give you a tip. It's their own right to be generous or not. If they are, then you should be thankful, but you shouldn't expect. They are not robbing you of something. They just want to eat. What if they just have enough budget for their meals?
You just do your job well, and let the circumstances decide over your tip. Be cheerful about your job. And be thankful you got one.

Most all Mormons are the absolute worst non tip offenders! I worked as a waiter near the Utah border while going to college, In 4 years the only Mormon to ever tip me was an actor, (the REAL John Wayne) he was filming a movie "The Cowboys" at that time!

Maybe they listed to Russ Parr in the morning and feel a sense of entitlement (Russ Parr is a BRAINWASHER who caters to people who can't think for themselves!).
On the other hand, many cultures don't believe they should have to pay extra for a service from someone who is an expert in the field (in your case, maybe a food service). My parents are Hispanic and don't generally tip. They are frugal, and to be honest, they don't know that the tip went up from 10% - 20% over the last 15 years or so (newsflash, mom and dad!).

No simple answer to that. I tip appropriately (15 - 25%). My wife tends to undertip, yet she 's more sophisticated than me(at least when we met). she get's on me when i tell her what should be left as a tip. she thinks i'm too generous, but i've worked family dining restaurants b4 and know servers/waiters
have to do and put up with, so....

There is an illicit assumption that lurks in this question. Does the same thing happen to others in the place you work? Does the same thing happen in the place next door, the next street, in various other places?
A little statistical research might go a long way to convincing your readers of the authenticity of your assumption. Otherwise they're going to put it down to raw prejudice.
Take care.
