I've tried LimeWire, BitTorrent, eMule, and many others but I can never connect to the network.

could be the isp blocking the ports used for p2p. Try going into the options and changing the port number to something that isn't used and nowhere near the range the ISP's block. Also try making sure the port is opened to allow the free transfers. goto http://portforward.com for detailed instructions on this.

It could also be that the port you have selected for the p2p programs is used by another program and this won't allow them to work properly.

do you have a firewall
either on your computer or at the gateway of your router

you may have to set one on your comp to let the programs connect

or

you may have to set up port forwarding at your router

some ISP are actively blocking use of such programs. i would contact your isp and ask if they blovk or allow p2p
