No! The US should follow the UK's example. We have the toughest driving test in the world. Apart from having a theory test, followed by the practical test, a learner also has to know how to maintain the car. He / she should be able to change a wheel, change the oil, top up the screen washer etc. Also, in the UK, they are planning to increase the minimum age to either 18 or 21 before a person can learn to drive. It makes little difference whether a teenager has passengers or not as most accidents involve other vehicles. All that new law is saying is that, "we don't mind you killing other road users but we will not have you killing your friends". That is not a good message. Simply keep youngsters off the road and make the test as tough as possible. Finally, we, in the UK, are also planning to ban any new driver from drinking any alcohol before driving. Basically, any new driver found to have had only a sip of wine will be charged with "Driving under the Influence of Alcohol and will be given an immediate ban.

Not much more than a pint is the limit Everyone is different but a pint is probably about the marker. It used to be closer to 2 pints but they reduced it. It's unfortunate that they can't find a way to test if you're drunk rather than the exact amount of alcohol in your system. So many people get banned for driving in the morning because they still have alcohol in there ststem even though there sober.

I think it is an excellent idea. TX put a similar law into effect in 2005. In addition, they cannot use a telecommunications device while driving (i.e. cell phone, blackberry, pager, etc.) and they cannot drive between 1am and 5am (unless with family, school function or work related).

People don't obey it. It can't be enforced unless a teen gets pulled over for something else. This is just politicians throwing a bone to the soccer mom lobby.

Already got it here in Wisconsin... Yeah, it's a good idea; insurance for only a limited number of fatalities and injuries when the idiots get in wrecks...

We have had that law in MN for years. It is a great law as it limits one of the distractions that new drivers have. It is there for the safety of the new driver and everyone else in the community.

It is an excellent idea. Too many people die in road accidents.

Less distractions for kids who are new at being behind the wheel.
