Sometimes people call certain faiths in Christian dead for a joke. But what it means are the people are going through the motions, playing church. It is more of a social gathering, and Jesus isn't really worshiped, and the people aren't seeing God's manifested power.

A "dead" religion is simply one that is not practiced anymore. It then becomes a mythology, such as the ancient Greek gods of Olympus or many of the ones found here: http://www.godchecker.com
However one feels about Christianity, it is very much alive and well. It has 2.1 billion followers worldwide, making it the largest religion in the world. It is by no means dead. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_religions#Largest_religions_or_belief_systems_by_number_of_adherents

First, I'd like to play ombudsman and correct something in your question. The idea of political freedom is not inherited from Christianity. It is inherited from the enlightenment thinkers such as Rousseau, who devised the social contract. A government can only govern by consent of the governed. So we give up some liberties in exchange for protections and services rendered by the government. It's a balance that we have to re-establish generation after generation. As far as how the Christian religion is imposed, I agree with the idea of teaching creationism in school. That is a very good example of how the Christian religion is imposed. One can argue that it's not Christianity, but all one has to do is ask about the nature of the creator of the universe, and he sees quickly exactly who creationism advocates have in mind. For the rest, the imposition is through legislation that is based on Christian ethics: the ban on gay marriage, the resistance and limitations of stem cell research, the continuing fights over abortion. These are more indirect ways that Christianity tries to foist itself on the population at large. You have to remember that we are not a Christian nation. We are a nation with Christians in it, as well as Jews, and Muslims, and atheists and agnostics, and Buddhists and Pagans. We don't all agree with the Christian ethic. To put legal strictures on us based on Christian beliefs is to deny non-Christians the freedoms that Christians take for granted.

I wish religion was dead.
Jesus had nothing good to say about religion.
Religion defined is man, by his own efforts seeking the approval and acceptance of God.
Christianity is God reaching out to man. Man cannot earn or deserve what God in Christ Jesus has given for us on the cross.
So religion is the opposite of Christianity.

James 2:26
"For as the human body apart from the spirit is lifeless, so faith apart from [its] works of obedience is also dead."
IOW, faith is just more than belief - it must be expressed through acts of obedience to God. And of course, on the other side of it, works alone will never gain you salvation either - you must confess that Jesus is Lord, repent of your sins, and have faith in God. Both of these elements must be present and work together. If one or the other (faith or works) is missing, then I would consider that particular religious observance to be dead.

actually christians have a belief. A belief that Christ will eventually reign, when all his enemies are destroyed. So it is not a religion but rather a faith in the living God.

and to the angel of the church of sardis write, ''these things says He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars: 'i know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead.' '' revelation 3:1 (nkjv)
Jesus is referring to churches and individuals who partake in religious ritual, recite memorized lines, and maybe even do volunteer work, but have no real passion for their faith. religion without conviction, self sacrifice, and passion is dead.
