at the same time. I don't really want to rearrange my rca cables each time I want to listen through a different sound source.

The DVD player IS the reciever. I know I can play TV through the 5.1, but I want to know how I can run the 5.1 ANNNNND the tv audio at the same time. I don't always want to watch TV in 5.1.

No, that is not what I am trying to do. Basically I want my tv to play audio through the tv speaker and 5.1 dvd player AT THE SAME TIME. Not that I will be using them at the same time, but because I do not want to watch tv through the 5.1 all the time. Sometimes I want to leave the dvd player turned off and watch tv normally through my tv speaker, but sometimes I want to turn down the volume on the tv, turn on the dvd player and controll the volume through the dvd player. I do not have a reciever, the 5.1 is connected directly to the dvd player

*I do not have a reciever

*I do not wish to listen to dvd's through my TV

*My dvd does not have audio out (except only through 5.1)

*I want to listen to TELEVISION through 5.1 and tv speaker simutouniously. That is what I am trying to do.

*Even if I did buy a reciever it would not work with my current setup because dvd does not have audio out.

Solution found. I put 2 RCA double adapters, like this one:

http://www.planetmicro.co.uk/upload/product_images/100/M006260.jpg

into the audio out puts of the digital set top box. Then I ran a set of rca cables (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/images/howto/SmallHRCACables2to2.jpg) to audio in of the dvd player and a set of rca cables to the tv.

Now I can use tv speaker or 5.1 surround sound whenever I want, and I dont have to change anything around.

Okay after looking at everthing I have some questions. How many inputs does your TV have? It appears from your drawing that you are running your dvd through your vcr? Does your tv have s-video input? If so, I would recommend that you use that to hook the dvd player as it would provide a better picture than composite video. I would also hook up the audio outputs of the dvd ( red and white RCA connector) directly to the tv. That would allow you to use either the TV for sound or your surround sound system. If your TV lacks enough inputs, I would buy an audio/video switch box as this would provide you with the extra inputs and allow you to switch between components without having to swap cables. I hope that answers your question.

are there any outputs on the back of the tv? If you can do it, there should be either a rca out or a optical out. Hook on of these up to your receiver and you should have it. Now regular tv won't be a dolby or dts, so it will have to be set in pro logic 2. If you want the dolby or dts, you will have to hook the dvd player up to the receiver also.

if you have any questions feel free to email me.

UPDATE
What model do you have? If you have the tv hooked up already and don't want to use 5.1, then just select on your receiver either stereo or surround stereo and that will get you the basic stero sound. Is that what you are trying to do?

You need to give more info about your setup:
It matters how your signal's coming in, and how it's being processed, and what outputs that piece has. ...
So:

- Is your A/V signal a cable connection?
- Does it come into a cable box? Or straight to the TV? Or straight to the DVD/Receiver...?
.. etc.

With just those three components, you've got lots of ways audio and video could be routed.

either you don't know what you really want, or your DVD/Receiver is not capable of doing what you want. It should be a simple matter of using a audio output back from the receiver to the TV video input you are using.

Upgrade to the right receiver to do what you want.
