Check ur pet store, there r numerous products to deter this habit, from scratching posts to heavy clear plastic u attach to the sides of the sofa and sprays that repel the cat from scratching. Do what u can, but Never have a cat declawed, it is a cruel, painful procedure. I am sorry to see so many cat haters at this site. Hope something works for you.

I find a water pistol handy !! - well my cat has only tried to scratch my sofa once and she was reprimanded - I lost it and shouted at her. I found a piece of old wood in the shed which was left over from creating shelves in the loft and have placed it under the coffee table in the living room and she loves to scratch her claws on that. She hasn't been near the sofa since.

You can place a cat scratching post on the corner they scratch and they'll scratch the scratching post instead of the sofa.
Hope this helps

Theres a few things you can do. They have a furniture spray you could buy at petco that is supposed to prevent them. Get a scratching post. You can spray them whenever they do this. What i used to do was put catnip all over their scratching post, that was probably the best solution for me.

Even if you buy a new cat, that won't stop them scratching your sofa.

I kept a bottle of water to spray the cat when she did it, and she stopped doing it within 2 -3 days.

Yep its called "Sticky paws" and is like double sided tape that you put around your sofa. the cat's paws stick to it and they don't like the feeling so they stop scratching.

I use a product called 'getaway'. You spray it lighly on your furniture and they hate the smell of it so stay away. It smells slighly of lemons and its'nt realy that detectable but apparently cats hate it, and is does'nt stain or mark your furniture. You can get it from any pet shop. If not that there are loads of others - any pet shop can help

They have sprays in the pet section that deter cats from certain porous surfaces. I got a new couch and sprayed this on the bottom of my couch and my cats never bothered it. After awhile you can stop spraying and they still will not bother it. Check in your pet section or pet store for this product.
