Corneal transplantations are performed for several reasons:
* To improve the optical qualities of the cornea and thus improve vision—eg, replacing a cornea that is scarred after a corneal ulcer; is clouded from edema (Fuchs' dystrophy or edema after cataract surgery); is opaque due to deposits of nontransparent abnormal corneal stromal proteins (eg, hereditary corneal stromal dystrophy); or has irregular astigmatism, as occurs with keratoconus.
* To reconstruct the anatomic cornea to preserve the eye—eg, replacing a perforated cornea.
* To preserve the eye from a disease unresponsive to medical management—eg, severe, uncontrolled fungal corneal ulcer; or to alleviate pain—eg, to relieve severe foreign body sensation due to recurrent ruptured bullae in bullous keratopathy.
Consult an Ophthalmologist.

Blindness caused by corneal opacity only can be cured by a corneal transplant. Cornea is the outer transparent membrane of the eye . It is grafted from a donor`s body.
Other causes of blindness need different types of treatment.
