The operative Freemason is someone who works in stone but is not tied down by a guild or employer.
The speculative Freemason, ie a member of Freemasonry, is a man, over 21 (in some areas and under some conditions you need only be 18), of good character and strict morals.
A Freemason is someone who lives by three main principles,
Brotherly Love - Every true Freemason will show tolerance and respect for the opinions of others and behave with kindness and understanding to his fellow creatures.
Relief - Freemasons are taught to practise charity and to care, not only for their own, but also for the community as a whole, both by charitable giving, and by voluntary efforts and works as individuals.
Truth - Freemasons strive for truth, requiring high moral standards and aiming to achieve them in their own lives.
There is plenty of conspiracy and false information plastered all over the internet, and with such fictional films as Tomb Raider (which is illuminati, not Freemasonry, the former is extinct and has never been in conjunction with the latter), National Treasue, Da Vinci Code, which remember are FICTION, made in hollywood where fact is nethier here nor there. A simple glance at the answers above, where not one agrees with the other, and not one is a first hand account of fact.

The freemasons are an organization that traces its roots back to groups of masons (stone workers) in the beginning of Christian Europe (over 1500 years ago). They are a secret group that does not allow members to tell outsiders about the group activites, which is why there is so much mysticism and conspiracy theories surrounding the group. However, in reality, they are largely social organizations that do local charity work. They are less and less popular today and because of this, the freemasons in NYC have begun giving tours of their headquarters (previously thought of as unthinkable) for extra income. Some allege that every president except that John F Kennedy has been a free mason. Personally I don't believe that.

As the world’s oldest and largest fraternal organization, Freemasonry today is built on Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth. Through fellowship, charity, education and leadership, Freemasons are making their lives - and their communities - stronger by the day.
Freemasonry aims to promote Friendship, Morality, and Brotherly Love among its members. It is, by definition, a fraternity; comprised of men from every race, religion, opinion, and background who are brought together as Brothers to develop and strengthen the bonds of friendship. With over 3 million members, Freemasons belong to the largest and oldest fraternal organization in the world. Freemasonry proposes to “make good men better” by teaching – with metaphors from geometry and architecture – about building values based on great universal truths.
How do I become a Freemason? Ask!
Because Masons have not traditionally recruited members, and do not hold public meetings, there has long been confusion about how to join the Fraternity. Does someone ask you? Do you ask? Today, because of widespread interest in the Fraternity – along with the plethora of both information and misinformation found on the Internet – the following information was put together on how men can join:
Most men can become a Mason by simply asking – like Washington, Franklin, and most every Mason from the past to the present day. Membership is open to men of every race, religion, culture, and level of income. The requirements for membership are that you be over the age of 18, believe in Supreme Being, and can be found to be of good character. The belief in a Supreme Being is said to be a requirement that is needed to take certain oaths, otherwise “no obligation would be binding upon you.”
Generally, men seek out a Lodge near their home or workplace, or ask someone they know who is a Mason to recommend a Lodge to them.
Not all men can become Masons, however. Masonry does not purport to make “bad men good,” only “good men better.” Only men of good character are accepted into the Fraternity. Masonic lodges review every applicant’s moral character – and the centuries-old “blackball” system is still in place; members must be voted in by a 100% vote of Lodge members present.

Freemasons are a secret society that descended from the Christian Heretics that were exterminated in Europe 800 years ago. Their rites and procedures inspired the resurrection of Wicca and Neo-Paganism although it wasn't their intention to do so. They also had a hand in the central concepts behind the United States. They kept many of the rites, mysteries, and rituals of the Gnostic faiths but lost the Spirituality. If they had understood the spiritual side then the World would be very different, perhaps not better, perhaps not worse, but certainly different.

A Freemason is an architect or builder of cities. To be a Freemason is to be a builder not of the material walls, which makes up a society but the inner working of a sociological culture itself. I hope this helps. Best Regards, M.G.S.

Sorry - Freemasonry's (FM) definition is not readily understandable unless you know something about FM. It's an organisation which uses metaphors of operative stonemasons' tools and implements, against the allegorical backdrop of the building of King Solomon's Temple. This leads to a further description of FM as "a system of morality veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols." Argument with FM continues where people call it a secret society and FM replies it is a society with secrets - embodying its right for privacy. In the USA they are known as Shriners and in UK as Masons. They also argue that they are not a religious organisation, although their Lodges are regarded as being on sacred ground, they often have chaplains, hymns and prayers to their God. They welcome all faiths to the Lodge. The Lodge members, entered and fellow apprentice and master mason are unaware of what goes on in the highest echelons of FM which has been accused of embracing a Lucifarian Doctrine.
