You might be interested in the concept of lucid dreaming: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucid_dreams
"A lucid dream is a dream in which the person is aware that he or she is dreaming while the dream is in progress. During lucid dreams, it is often possible to exert conscious control over the dream characters and environment, as well as to perform otherwise physically impossible feats.
A lucid dream can begin in one of two ways. A dream-initiated lucid dream (DILD) starts as a normal dream, and the dreamer eventually logically concludes that he or she is dreaming, or a wake-initiated lucid dream (WILD) occurs when the dreamer goes from a normal waking state directly into a dream state with no lapse in consciousness."
The above link discusses ways of increasing the lucid dream state.

Journaling: Free-form writing that puts all of your thoughts onto paper. A specific form of this is writing a question to yourself at the top of the page and then writing out the first thoughts that come to you. Good for getting insights from your subconscious.
Self-Hypnosis: Relaxation followed by suggestions. Good for altering your own behavior patterns. Downside, takes training to become proficient at it. Alternative, purchasing self-hypnosis CDs or videos.
Meditation: Excellent for helping you to become aware of your of your thoughts, especially the rampant thoughts that you are not consciously aware of. Downside, takes time and practice before becoming proficient.
Other techniques that are excellent for behavior modification and releasing subconscious fears and anxieties.
NLP, EFT, Hypnosis, Guided Imagery, Forgiveness, etc.

Study tai-chi, you will gradually become more aware of your body and mind. I have used it to control my anxiety attacks. Also before you go the bed focus on what you are trying to pull from your mind and eventually you will unlock it. Journaling will somtimes help it surace to. Like writing your thoughts and random feelings. There's not really an exact way to tell you "how to"/.
