Read Matthew chapter 17 verses 20-21, 20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.
In this case prayer and fasting can help build faith.
Mark 9: 28 And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out?
29 And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.
In this case prayer and fasting can tune spiritual gifts, they can also answer questions of the soul, and sometimes to feel more spiritual, all fasts should have a purpose and be accompanied by prayer. Fast for someones health, fast for answers. Some cannot fast due to things like diabetes but they can still pray.

this is the shortest way i can explain it to you:
prayer puts God's attention on us. fasting puts our attention on God. it builds our discipline and moves us into a deeper relationship with God. there are all different kinds of fasts. a ''daniel fast'' is a ten-day fast that allows only fresh fruits and vegetables with water. read about it in the book of daniel. daniel and co. refused to eat the babylonian king's food, because it was sacrificed to foreign gods. the bible says this is a healthy kind of fast. a few years ago, it was discovered by medical doctors that the ''daniel fast'' cleanses the body of toxins and thereby increases metabolism, strengthens the immune system, and improves the ability to concentrate. the ''lenten fast'' is a forty-day fast that goes on in certain churches during lent. most people that participate give up one or two food items during the lenten season. this year, i gave up meat. i don't know for sure, but i believe it's meant to imitate Christ's forty-day fast in the dessert. a ''true fast'' allows only water, and usually only lasts a few days for me. the whole point of fasting, for me, is to show God my dedication to Him, and i also do it if i'm seeking answers to questions i have about making lifechanging decisions. i leave the tv turned off and immerse myself in the Word until i'm done. come to think of it, i might fast this weekend. i've been meaning to do it sometime soon. thanks for the reminder.

That you are able to live in the spirit and not the flesh. This means to overcome your body for the need to eat and to only live on the word of God. You are not supposed to tell anyone that you are fasting until after you have stopped fasting.

The aim of fasting is as a show of faith to God. The point is really to show God that you care about Him enough that you're going to put yourself into suffering in His name. Also, every time you think "Gee, I'm hungry," you think of Him. In a way, you're constantly praying when you fast. I think it's really a great practice that can bring you a lot closer to God.

Starvation? I like to eat, drink wine, especially with a plate of mmmm....rainbow trout barbecued whole with lemon, white wine, butter, garlic, shallots and maybe some soya sauce and Chinese five spices powder. Also, a side of corn on the cob, mashed potatoes, asparagus, vegetables on skewers and a lovely dessert of cherries, apricots and peaches on skewers, barbecued with light vanilla ice cream and your choice of syrup--chocolate, strawberry or butterscotch.

Self discipline.........it also rids the body of toxins though. If you can learn to say no to food when you are hungry then resisting the temptation of making a bad choice for instant gratification should be easier.
