A severe pain, like kneeling on a bed of pins, has developed in the past 24 hours. No previous symptons, I injured the knee 25 years ago in a motor cycle accident but it hasn't hurt since. There is some fluid around the knee but not much. What is it likely to be?

Is your knee the only location? No triggering incident?
It sounds like a neuropathy . Go to your doctor and he will ask for a catscan if he is aware of your general physical condition. Whatever is causing it needs to be investigated further.
Onset of arthritis? Diabetic neuropathy? Side effect of some medication that you are taking?

I mangled up my knees in boot camp some 20 years ago. At that time they told me I'd have degenerative arthritis, and possible knee replacement when I was 40. At 22 years old, I figured the guy was fullash*t. I'm 37 now, and hardly able to get around the pain is so bad sometimes. It may be some sort of arthritis resulting from your injury, that has come a calling with age. Good luck. I'm not looking forward to getting mine looked at.

Hmm fluid in the knee. Sounds like you have arthritis or osteoarthridis you should go see an orthopeadic doctor for that. The fluid means that it could be pus if it is infected.

It could have something to do with your nerve ending or it could possibly mean you need to have some orthoscopic surgery. What ever it is If I were you I would go to your doctor and have him look at it and see if he will refer you to an orthopaedic specialist.
