Movie fighting is highly stylized. My sister is a level 9 gymnast and a 1st degree black belt. She has never mixed the two. I just hollered this question out at her and she busted out laughing. That's not how a fight goes. Most fights are actually pretty quick and end up on the ground. It's the centered, strong, grounded person that will win. Speed is good too of course

I wouldn't think so, and in over twenty years of teaching I've never seen anyone try this seriously. I've seen a few people do it accidentally, or as the result of a hit, but never as a deliberate strategy or tactical move.
As others have said, it looks really cool when everything is slowed down in the movies and the combatants are timing things perfectly. In a sparring situation or a real fight, the time required to begin and complete a flip would leave you way too exposed and vulnerable. Anyone but a completely inexperienced klutz would take advantage of that vulnerability in a second.
Leave the back flips for demonstrations and movie acting! If it does inspire you, why not create a demonstration routine with some friends that can incorporate appropriate timing and involve backfkips as part of the spectacle.

Flipping around in the air looks cool, builds conditioning, and is pretty fun, but it serves no purpose in a real fight. Like most of the cool spinning aerial kicks, they are impressive, but a decent opponent will snatch you out of the air, and pound some sense into you! We teach some "XMA" type forms at our school, but only to keep the kids in shape and mix up their routine. Oh, and to win at tournaments, since the judges love that stuff, go figure!
Do yourself a favor and learn good reality based self-defense techniques to keep yourself safe. If you still want to learn the movie type stuff, do it, it is a great way to keep in shape, and impress your friends, just don't try to win a fight with it!!!

You cant just flip, you need momentum or a set up, and i can move forward normally faster than the best fliper can flip back, so that kind of stuff is only realistic in movies, however it is really cool and i admire anyone who can do a flip like that

If you are flipping to look cool and thus avoid a fight, then that's cool. But in a real fight, flipping would waste energy, you take your eyes off your opponent and also turn your back to him. And gymnasts take a running start, which you would probably not have time to do.
Movies are cool, but all that Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon stuff is special effects.

Flipping is only for the movies, as it looks really cool.
In a real fight, flipping will leave you dangerously exposed, and the risk of tripping or not landing right is always there, your opponent wouldn't wait for you to land in order to do a follow-up move.
It's also alot of energy you have to spend in order to do the flips, this is not practical. In a fight you should conserve your energy as you don't know what your opponent or opponents will do.
I hope this information is useful.
good luck!

can flipping dodge bullets? and why would you waste energy by jumping up in the air. if it is a fight to win and the non flipping fighter is well trained, you might not land on the ground as planned

99.9 % of the time flipping is useless and a waste of energy. The only practical use of a flip is a guard pass, and that might just get you kicked in the face.

If the flips don't work just run up the wall like they did in The Matrix. :-)
I'm joking of course. Acrobatics are for movies...try it in the street and the best you'll do is get beat up.

ROFLMAO! This has to be a troll job!
If you do a Martial Art that spars, try doing a backflip in sparring and see how it works out.
Honestly if you hone it to the level that you are great at it in sparring, you may actually be able to use it. It would take some massive balls to pull off.
Also, if Genki Sudo didn't do it in a fight, then it probably can't be done...
