I might try around a 100mm prime L lens.
A lot of times, you can choose the distance for the shot, so zoom is less important. And the extra speed and clarity can really add to the photo.
MAaybe a low zoom would work: 24-105mm f/4L Imagized Stabalised USM right at $1,0000.
Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Image Stabilizer USM Autofocus Lens for $400
My suggestion is to go to your local shop and rent them and give thema thourough testing to ensure you get want you really need.
But definately try for 'Primes' if appropriate, Imaged Stabalized, and an 'L' lens for clarity anytime you can.

Fashion photography covers a wide range of focal lengths. You'd be using a 200mm for closeups and sweeping back to an 18mm for wider shots. You'd get the best results from prime lenses instead of using zooms, but zooms will be more versatile, unless you have multiple DSLR bodies and an assistant.
Another consideration would be Image Stability lenses, as you'll be doing much of your work handheld.
I'd look at spending some of the $500 on lighting, as that can make all the difference in fashion, portrait, or glamor.

Fashion photographers tend to use either primes and fast primes at that or expensive zoom lenses. Those that do work DSLR will probably use a 50mm f1.4 for a full body shot and a 85mm f1.4 for more closeups. Zooms are also used generally expensive things like 24-70 f2.8 of either canon or nikon. Now if you're just getting started a 50mm f1.8 will do nicely.

Check out the New Tamron 18-250 zoom, it is the only lens on the market with a 14.9 zoom ration and on our XTi's with it's 1.6 magnification...35mm equivalent...28-400. For portrait work I use a 50mm f1.4. Check out www.bhphotovideo.com for you options, reviews and demos. I have been doing business with them for more the 25 years, a great Professional staff.
