The moon is a huge chunk of rock, closely resembling a sphere, drifting around our planet, which components have light reflecting properties. Its commonly associated to folklore and mythology because we know so little about it. It is associated to the darkest side of most myths because it is represents mystery and the unknown, and because it is a fact that the moon does influence a lot of tings in the planet(ex: the tides, sea currents, it's known to affect personallities too, etc.). For example, according to folklore, the full moon triggers the werewolf transformation.

The moon represents the god of fertility to pre-Islamic Arabs. The pagan god of the Arabs was the moon, because night provided dew which watered the meager crops that could grow at that time. Hubal was the god of the moon, the Arabic version of the semitic Baal, the fertility god symbolized by the sun in other cultures. Ramadan is celebrated at night, with the moon being a significant symbol for this reason.

The founders of the Mormon religion believed that the moon was inhabited by people 6' tall who dressed like Quakers and lived to be 1,000 years old.
They also believed men were living on the Sun.
Before the Arabs became Muslims they had many Pagan Gods. One of these was the Moon-god who was married to the sun goddess and the stars were his daughters. They called this Moon-God "Allah".
Muhammad received a revelation that Allah was the only God and all those other gods were false and he told the Arabs to stop worshipping those idols and to worship only Allah.

The moon rules the personality we don't show others from an astrological perspective. It also rules the sign of Cancer and that is thought to be the most maternal of all the signs. Most ancient civilizations thought each planet they could see was a God, including the Moon. This is a description of the moon from one of my astrology books: "...the sign position of the Moon tells the desire of your heart which may or may not be expressed or realized in your life. When you 'know what you mean but you can't say it,' it it your Moon that knows it and your Sun(sign) that can't say it. Also, when you 'don't know why I said that' it was your Moon expressing despite your Sun(if you are innerly satisfied with the involuntary speech) or the Sun expressing against the will of the Moon (if you are displeased with what has slipped out). Things you know without thought- intuitions, hunches, instincts- are the products of your Moon. Whatever you feel is most deeply yourself, whether or not you are able to do anything about it in the outer world, is the product of your Moon and of the sign your Moon occupies at birth."

Genesis calls it the lesser light to rule the night. God made it have four regular phases so people could use it as a kind of a giant clock in the sky to keep time and to plant and harvest their crops and such - it takes 28.5 days to go thru all four of its phases. God built the biblical calendar based upon the moon but man came and made the sun the basis for the calendar - the romans did this

the odd coincidence that the moon and sun are almost exactly the same size in the earth's sky is probably the source of a lot of magical thinking. there is no apparent reason for this, but it's hard to avoid the conclusion that it's of great cosmic significance.
