Living in Manhattan can be one of the most exciting and fabulous places you'll ever live! Just like any city, there are neighborhoods which are quiet and less happening, and there are some areas of the city that can be more dangerous than others. Always alive, Manhattan's subway runs 24 hours a day (with the exception of very rare strikes) and there are buses and (of course) taxis to keep you moving. Some folks own a car, but most would advise against it. Besides, all that walking helps you get exercise you need after eating at any of the top restaurants you'll find in the city.
Manhattan also boasts of one of the world's largest theatre scenes (which is true). If you like musicals, you'll find new and original work as well as old work being revived. Plays are also everywhere: from the East Village all the way to Columbia on the upper west side (and of course in the theatre district--midtown).
Like any large city, living in Manhattan can be expensive. The average rent for a studio is probably around 1100-1200 a month (more in some places), and buying food and doing the things you love to do (whatever it is--going to the movies is around $10) can get pricey. New York was recently named the third most expensive place in the country to buy a home. While it's wonderful place to live if you've got money, I would say that even if you ain't got it, there is still LOTS AND LOTS to do--any broke college student in Manhattan will tell you so.
I hope I've helped answer your question--if you need specifics, don't hesitate to reword your question.

Living in Manhattan is basically living in the epicenter of all human society...they don't call NYC the capitol of the world for nothing!
Can be very loud at times and is always more expensive then the outer boroughs, but most live in manhattan for the convienence and the status. Manhattan Island is some of the most expensive and prime real estate in the country, if not the world.
I personnally enjoy living in manhattan because my commute is a bit easier as opposed to when i was living in Queens. There is also a wide selection of businesses to choose from that only Brooklyn can come close to comparing to.
Plus there is the romanticism of this city, what with its beautiful architechture going hand in hand with the parks that take you away from what some like to call the concrete jungle.
Manhattan and NYC in general is a difficult place to live for many can not handle the noise, the action, the amount of people, and the amount of strange and bizarre things you may encounter. But the old saying is very true, if you are able to survive, thrive, and succeed in New York City, you will be able to do the same anywhere else in the world

It used to be cool. Then all of a sudden young urban professionals invaded and the rents went sky high. Greenwich Village once a mecca for artist is now a mecca for those who want to hang out with artists. Too bad. The painters and others left for Williamsbourg, Brooklyn and Long Island City, Queens.
