I just say... "Oh, they're as cute as they can be" and quickly try to change the subject. Then I laugh my -ss off as soon as they're gone.

Hey Margie, When was the last time you saw your feet?

From an etiquette standpoint, you should smile politely and if you can't truthfully tell them they're cute, then find something truthful and positive to say.

There is something good to be found in every person, you just have difficulty in seeing it. This will be a good exercise for you, because you clearly lack empathy. This lack will make life difficult for you, I suspect, so don't waste any time, start practising. You can start at your own mirror, can you see anything positive there? Truthfully?

I dont judge whether kids are cute or ugly..frankly i have hardly seen an ugly kid.But i do understand your point on parents who show off their kids...it gets really annoying and a bit embarassing because they dont realise what they are doing.I especially find it uncomfortable when they start boasting abt their kid's achievements...and the kids are like what?2?3 years old?

The people who were subjected to your baby photos would be the ones to ask.
How did they keep a straight face?
They left the room sooooooooooo fast!
I don't even have to see you to know that you're a train wreck : hate to look at it but you just can't avert your eyes from the disaster...

Ugly is a subjective matter. Some would say that an ugliness in the heart is much worse than an ugly face.

Truely one of my pet peeves as well. I feel you are only perpetuating the ritual though by blowing sunshine up their a$$ by lying. Only encourages them to show their beastly children to other innocent bystanders. Maybe go with a reaction like "oh, is he getting better?" or assuring them that ugly babies turn out to be attractive adults and that cute babies usually turn ugly, so their baby is better in the long run.

Because, they are really smitten by their little darlings, and very proud of them....it's true, some are not the cutest, but at least the poor kids have someone that loves them. Who knows...maybe people did that with our pictures when we were kids too. Very Possible.

Every child is beautiful to his/her mother and family. Just make a polite comment that has nothing to do with looks - such as "she looks like such a nice little girl!" and go on :-)

That is so fake and rude, and nobody complained when your mother showed pictures of you.

you dont have children do you?

im not saying i like seeing baby photos every second, but i can respect their happiness that they get from their children.
if you had any, you might understand.

this pride and happiness is something very few people find, and i think its great that people do indeed find it.
