The best thing he can probably do is to put an anesthetic on it. They are called "oral analgesics" and can be found in almost any drug store, or perhaps even a convenience store. It will only relieve pain for about a half hour or so at a time, but it can at least make it slightly more bearable.
Some people also swear by clove leaf oil or bourbon on a cottonball, but I don't think those will be strong enough for this type of pain.

That's weird....my best guy friend is also 22 and just had his wisdom teeth removed. He got sick after the surgery, had a fever but he is better now. He had pain a month or so before the surgery but the dentist gave him something to help it.
I don't really know what to tell you except to have him talk to the dentist and see if he can prescribe something for him.
Do you know if he has something called an "impacted tooth"? That's what my friend had.
Ibprofen sometimes works....or Tylenol. But I would consult the dentist and see what he says.

Use an ice pack on the outside of your cheek. Apply it for 20 minutes, then remove it for 20 minutes. Repeat as needed.
Gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water every 2 to 3 hours.

well wisdom teeth hurt when they come in.. and sometiems cna cause serious pain.. even after sugery pain can be supe rintense, but they give STRONG meds to take care of this..
luckily i never had to take them b/c my surgery wasnt that bad even tho all mine were impacted..
But i was told t take IB Profin to help ese soem discomfort when i had to wait for my perscriptions to be filled..
that and ice packs or heat packs both work fine.. One numbs pain the other helps soothe..

I was having trouble with mine about a year ago. I went through a bottle of 100 tylenols in a week. I would suggest something stronger but easier on the stomach. ughh, my ulcer.
He could try Vicadin, but that may put him to sleep.

Maybe he should look in to removing his wisdom teeth, but then again he should talk to his dental hygienist/Dentist. Because it might have something to do with his teeth, or maybe not, Ciao =D

I never got sick and I had 3 removed. I did get a bit dumber though.
Try to have soup on hand as he may not be able to eat whole food right away.
