Here's a review of the Olympus e510.

And one for the Panasonic Lumix FZ18.

You might want to consider the Sony DSC H series. They're excellent cameras

As for your last question, I'd recommend a DSLR if your budget can handle it. A DSLR-like camera is fine, but won't grow as your skills and interest grow. What you take out of the box is all you'll have.

Personally, I highly recommend the Nikon D40 as it's relatively inexpensive (<$599) and can take a wide range of quality lenses.

Off course the Olympus E510 is much better and much more interesting camera. On the other hand Olympus SLR is as a bridge between SLR-like and SLR cameras. It has some cool features such as Live View mode, many good lenses but smaller then Sony (it makes sensors for Nikon' SLR) and Canon sensor size, and bigger image noise. I have some articles about Olympus SLRs at my blog: http://fototramp.blogspot.com/2007/06/i-did-not-even-expect-that-olympus-slrs.html

There is a wide gap between these two cameras!!!

Here's a side-by-side of the two, and the Olympus blows away the fz18 on almost every comparison point.

The major things: sensor size is massive in dSLRs to give you better color pics, 10mp to give you clearer pics, external slash option, and the list goes on.

If you are serious about getting good pics, always go dSLR.
