beagles are wonderful dogs if you have the time to spend with them. they need a lot of exercise, so you need either a large yard or to be able to take them on walks frequently. the yard should be very securely fenced as once a beagle catches a scent it will do almost anything to find it. they do tend to be barkers, although of the 3 i have only 1 really barks(we have a barker, a digger, and 1 who just sits back and watches it all). all that said they are great with kids if introduced at an early age and are fiercly loyal. like most dogs they tend to pick one member of the family as theirs and will lay down their life for that person. be sure if you get one that you have alot of time or get another high energy dog as a companion.

They can be a great breed for the right owner. But they are not for everyone. Since they are a smaller breed, people tend to forget that they were originally bred to be hunting dogs that could work all day hunting rabbits and often severely underestimate the amount of exercise they need. This can lead to problem behaviors like excessive barking, digging, escaping/roaming, and destroying things.
People also tend to forget that they are scent hounds and as such have are unable to resist their instinct to follow scent trails. If they find a fascinating scent, they WILL follow their nose and usually become oblivious to the rest of the world around them (including an owner trying to get them to come, sit, stay, etc). Because of this they have a reputation for being stubborn. While some beagles can be stubborn and pig-headed (what's in it for me? they ask of every command/request) most of them are simply distracted or undermotivated. Of course, this strong instinct to follow a scent can be turned into an advantage. If a person chooses to teach scent discrimination to their beagle the dog will learn that certain smells (like termites, drugs, illegal produce and food items, people just to name a few things beagles are used to detect regularly by law enforcement and search and rescue) are much more rewarding to follow than others.
They do generally like to bark. And their bark has a unique quality that some people really like and others (like me) absolutely can't stand.
In my 7 years experience working with veterinarians, they are generally not a stoic breed (I like to call them beagle-wusses because most of them act as though you're killing them for simple and harmless procedures such as taking their temperature using an ear thermometer).
All in all, I wouldn't own the breed unless I inheirited one from a deceased relative or close friend. But that doesn't mean that other people with a different personality, lifestyle, and expectations/desires of their dog wouldn't do well. For all that I wouldn't own one, they are adorable. And being hounds, they have been bred to work in packs or at least small groups so they often get along well with other animals (at least other dogs, small caged pets and sometimes even cats can bring out their hunting instincts, so they need to be watched around small animals) and people (beware, their popularity as a pet has led to some very un-houndlike aggressive personalities being bred into the breed by backyard breeders and puppymillers out to make a quick buck).

hyper, fast, always hungry, short attention span, loving, very playful, chews on everything, easily bored.
At least that was my beagles. But I'm not well educated on the breed. I've just owned two.

They are EXTREMELY hyper. They have a very low attention span and are stubborn making them difficult to train. They are always hungry and will eat anything in sight including the wrapper it's in. They become easily bord so they tend to be destructive. They bark all the time that will annoy both you and all the neighbors. They love to run making them extremely difficult to catch if they were to get out of your yard. But they are adorable.

Make sure you have space for a lot of running and playing! (Big fenced back yard and close to a dog park). They have a lot of energy.
