Congratulations. Romania is an incredible country and the culture and language are simply lovely. To start, I would suggest meeting up with some Romanians. Unfortunately the Romanian community around you is centered in North Carolina, so attending a church service to meet up with people would be quite difficult. The next best thing is to start hearing and reading the language. The Colloquial Romanian series is very dry in my opinion, but it will help you if you use it in conjunction with Romanian books and newspapers as well as Romanian television. Television is a huge help because many shows are subtitled in Romanian but spoken in English, so you get a firm grasp of the language while enjoying some TV. Satellite TV is available through the Romanian Satellite Network (romsatnet.com) which may be a good investment for the whole family. But reading books from the library and hearing it on TV is no replacement for being immersed in the culture, so don't be scared if you are not fluent when you get there. Take the time to learn while you are there and before you know it, you will be navigating like an old pro. I wish I could work in Romania for a western salary, what a life! Tip wise: Learn to walk places, in most cities, everything is walking distance and you tend to meet friends and family on the street. Also, visit other places while you are there, the mountains and seaside are lovely. And please try to make Romanian friends, they will show you all of the little tricks to living in a particular city and having fun :) Good luck and I am sure you will have an incredible experience!

I have no disagreement with GrahamH's suggestion.
However, "Language / 30" has an introductory course to Romanian (and many other languages) which will give you a basic knowledge of the language faster than Routledge even though it doesn't cover as much material as Routledge.
It all depends on what level you all wish to learn Romanian.
You can find "Language / 30" in most bookstores or order it through them. It comes with a booklet and tape cassettes (maybe CDs now) in the target language and introduces you to about 500 words and most of the more common phrases.
I used "Language / 30" to learn basic Irish Gaelic and found it much more effective than the Introductory Self-Tutor to Irish Gaelic by Michael O. Siadhail , even though OSiadhail's book gives you a better picture of the Irish language overall just like Routledge would for Romanian.

I'm not sure which country you are in or whether it is available there, but the language course "Colloquial Romanian", published by Routledge Keagan and Paul, is excellent. I used it to learn Romanian and got 100% in a language exam!!!!

living in Romania is not easy , especially if you will live in a large city such as Bucharest , Cluj , Brasov etc ... but you will get used to it. It depends on where you will live , cause if you live in a good neighbourhood maybe you won't have any problems at all. but you will still have problems with the traffic , the roads ( which are in a bad state) , with the bureaucracy which is also a disaster here , etc etc .
P.S. I live in Romania so if you have any questions please feel free to e-mail me
