- I would like a rosary necklace that is made of long-lasting material, but is affordable. Would you suggest silver or would crystal rosaries last as well?
- Where is the best place to buy rosaries? I know a couple of church-affiliated shops, but they only sell very simple ones. And the jewelry shops I can't afford to buy in...
Any advice or tips on purchasing rosaries?

You can get a free rosary here!

If you're interested in making them- which is a great hobby by the way, here's the link to make them: http://www.rosaryarmy.com/rosaryinstructions_html.aspx

I suggest you try to make one. It's really simple and a little addicting, I have to admit.

God Bless :)

Buying A Rosary

I collect rosaries, as well as pray them, and I've gotten some wonderful sterling and/or crystal ones from eBay. A rare or unusual Rosary may end up as the focus of a bidding war, but it's not usual for a pretty and well-made vintage pair to go for around $25. There are also dealers who sell brand name beads such as Chapel at a slightly reduced price, as well as folks who make beautiful hand-done rosaries.

I prefer crystal beads to all metal rosaries, simply because I find them more enjoyable to use. My favorite one is an incredible aurora borealis set from the 1960's with a sterling Crucifix and center medal. I bought it for just under $30 on eBay, and it's gorgeous.

I would say just buy a simple, yet beautiful rosary. Crystal is very helpful here. Church stores are probably the best place where I live, but if they don't work out for you, maybe try online, or talk to your priest. My last point- have your new rosary blessed by a priest, and it will be perfect.

I would say that the crystal would be a better choice, and definitely last longer without much upkeep (such as with silver or wood).

There are some very affordable ones to be found at the Catholic Company:

Or, on Catholic.org, there is a link to a number of websites which showcase quite a few beautiful rosaries:

Great luck in finding the perfect one ;)

Ask your priest. Seriously. One of my relatives is a priest, and guess what gift people always give to priests... that's right, rosaries! Any time anybody goes to any place of religious significance, they bring him back a rosary. He already HAS a rosary, and so he saves those rosaries to give to people who ask him for one. He's given away rosaries hand-carved from trees in the Holy Land, rosaries blessed by the Pope, rosaries from sites where people report apparitions of Mary, rosaries made from precious metals, rosaries from Mother Teresa's convent in Calcutta, rosaries from everywhere and everyone. He's thrilled when someone asks him for one, and he's always looking for opportunities to give them away. I'm sure your priest probably also has a surplus of high-quality rosaries that he's happy to depart with. Explain what you're looking for and see if he offers you one of his own.

Amelia Bedelia is right -- I've made scads of knotted rosaries using the instructions and links for materials from the Rosary Army site. In fact I'm working on a bunch now for this year's RCIA class. They are nice-looking, durable, and you can make them in many different colors ... and I like the knotted cord connection historically, too.

I think crystal ones are better(when you handle the metal a lot it gets a weird smell...I think anyway).

Go online, lots of places that have good deals on rosaries.

I would pick a rosary with your patron saint in it...

I've always been partial to the plastic ones that glow in the dark. ^__^ I still have a few laying around. Any priest or nun in your area would know where they're available. Many churches also give this type out to their catechumens and school students. They're cheap but they do the job perfectly well.
