Hi :) I'm 22 and I was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was 13. From my experience, and I've done a lot of research, unless it's absolutely neccessary because of problems breathing surgery should be a very last resort. People who have had surgery sometimes end up with other complications, and less flexiability than they had to begin with. Swimming is EXCELLENT for scoliosis, as is yoga and pilates. Walking, rollerblading, bike riding is all great too. As long as you keep active you'll be fine. I used to go to a chiropractor, but the degrees of my curve did not go down. I finally found an atlas orthogonist chiropractor. They concentrate on the atlas bone which is right at the base of your skull. If your atlas bone is off alignment it pushes your whole spine off alignment. They do tons of x-rays before treatment begins to make sure you are a good canditate. If they say you are, they use this little machine to push the bone back in place (TRUST ME ZERO PAIN). I've been going for three years now. When I started going my scoliosis was at 50 degree S curve. I am now down to 40 degrees!!! I would recommend finding an atlas orthogonist in your area. Since you are so young it could help a lot to straighten your spine :)

You are young, it is not too late to start on Yoga! There are 'corrective'exercises you could learn from a real good expert, under close supervision and guidance; surgery in some cases is known to help, but, again specialists with experience required! No restriction on food, health habits etc., they are as for any normally healthy people who want to stay healthy and fit, with weight and shape (fitness) under check and control! Swimming is excellent, any stroke you are comfortable with, your own instinct, your own body will tell you, will guide you, if you communicate well with your body and system! Back stroke, butterfly etc., will help you to retain symmetry while exercising as you would know, breast stroke will uniformly spread the exercise value, and help that way; a cycle of the different strokes will be advantageous! (the web site has a lot of useful information on scoliosis!) Wish you good luck!

I have scoliosis as a result of having Neurofibromatosis type I.
Yes swimming is good to help strengthen the muscles to support the spine. It is very hard and near impossible to correct scoliosis, all you can really do is treat the symptoms. The good thing about swimming is the water takes the weight of your whole body and uses every muscle. It is classed as a low impact exercise so is beneficial for many conditions.

Hope this helps

You did not state your age, but usually if caught these are treated at a young age. In the past they would put a person in a full body cast to keep the curve from progressing. Now they will put in the Harrington Rods. Yes they work well. Surgery is likely your only avenue, no food, drink, supplement, crystal, aura, acupuncture, homeopathic, or anything else will make a shred of difference.

i had scoliosis. ended up having surgery on it, very happy that i went through with the surgery. there really is no way you can treat it. wearing your brace can help prevent it from getting worse. and i also heard that yoga helps strengthen the muscles in your back to prevent it from getting worse, but it didnt help in my case. but it all depends on the person.
