In our institution such surgery is performed by a pediatric surgeon who has trained in the area.

Some fetal abnormalities that are detected on maternal ultrasound will progress during pregnancy. Fetal intervention is performed to arrest the damage. Such interventions include diaphragmatic hernia, myelomeningocele, sacrococcygeal teratoma, hydronephrosis, and certain types of congenital heart disease.

I used to have BCBS at a time when I was seeing a maternal-fetal medicine specialist, and it covered it. I agree with the first post- you might possibly have to have a referral. I don't have that insurance anymore, but I had to see one this entire pregnancy.

I found this site to be helpful in terms of describing fetal surgical procedures and also the explanations of fetal abnormalities. I hope this helps! Best of luck!
