I never took ADD meds, but have worked with kids with ADD/ADHD who were taking them. Ritalin is typically more of a short term stimulant that usually must be taken a few times per day. Concerta usually is only taken once a day, usually in the morning and is timed release. In other words, the effects of it do not wear off in a few hours.(I believe don't quote me though that Concerta is NOT a stimulant like Ritalin.) Also, if you see a medicine that has "XR" or "ER" or "SR" or something similar, that it usually also means it is extended or timed release" There are advantages/disadvantages to each. You should consider whether you (or whoever is taking the medicine) has difficulty only at certain times of the day or do they need something that is going to work all day for example. If you are interested in finding out side effects and the like, those prescription medicine books that you get in CVS/RiteAid wherever your local pharmacy is are pretty good basic information. Another place you can look online is www.drugstore.com or www.rxlist.com

Paul S is completely right.
Both are the same drug, Methylphenidate, or MPH.
The only difference is Concerta is a sustained release form of it. That means it dissolves slower in your body, and the drug is released over time. Its kinda good because it keeps a steady flow of the drug in your blood stream rather than getting it all at once.
But, they are the same drug. Different brand names.

See if they offer an extended release version? If not talk to your doctor about what she can safely take to sleep. I dont know about the way it is prescribed, but maybe if she can take it only in the morning or mid-day.

One drug is not better than another.
Your Dr. needs to consider your body, and your symptoms to determine which might suit you best.
And, that is not your job, It's the Dr.'s job.
