You didn't tell us what you intended to do with your rifle. Hunt? Target Shoot? Long range? Short Range?
When it comes to rifle scopes to fit a nice quality gun like your Remington 77, you get exactly what you pay for. No more, No less. I would stay with variable power , 3-9 power adjustable scope regardless of what you intend to shoot with it. Bushnell does in fact sell a decent mid-range scope and so does Weaver, as well as Burris. The brands I would tell you to avoid are BSA, NC Star (Chinese Import) and pretty much anything Japanese low end scopes (All brands) The mid range scopes I've listed all have good light gathering lenses and most have dual-X reticules. A decent mid-range scope for your gun will start price wise at about $100.00 and up.This is not the thing you should skimp on....

There's no such thing as a 3-9x12, that's a 3-9x magnification scope with a 12mm front lens. It would be too dark to use.
If you want good low light performance try something like a 4x28 or a 6x42, basically the objective should be 7x the magnification because that gives a 7mm exit pupil which is as big as the pupil of your eye can dilate.
A moderate fixed power scope will give you the ability to operate out to 300 yards and you'll be able to afford better quality glass that with a variable scope. A moderate power will allow good light with a lower mounting hight which will give you a more natural head position and allow you to shoot more accurately.
To an extent, you get what you pay for, but I have to admit that my BSA target scope is at least as good as the Nikon and Leupold scopes I have.
If you can't see clearly and rely on the alignment of your scope then all the money you spent on your rifle and ammo is worthless, so don't "spoil the ship for a hapeth of tar".

Look at Burris, Nikon or Bushnell 3200 series.
If you plan on using it much Good Glass is the way to go. the extra 50 to 100 bucks is worth its weight in gold. If you intend on hunting deer with it the Burris ballistic plex is a good reticule, as it will give you hold over at various ranges. Of course you still need to shoot these ranges first just to verify. But the glass is good and has light gathering properties the cheep optics don't. 3-9 power or 4-12 will be fine for hunting.
If you entertain the idea of shooting longer ranges you will want a higher top power. But when your shooting way out there on max power this is where you will see a BIG difference between a 100 dollar scope and a 200-300 dollar scope as the cheaper scope will dim and suffer clarity issues.
Good glass makes those long shoots easier. Your eyes will thank you!!!

A bushnell 3-9 X 12. My brother owns a Remington 700 30.06 and I own a Winchester model 70 7mm WSM. Both of our guns came with this scope and we love it!
